Nortriptyline and Hydergine

Posted by bleauberry on December 26, 2009, at 15:36:58

I was surfing around just looking at stuff related to Nortriptyline and stumbled onto one of the patent-pending pages. You know, you've probably seen them. I think people are filing patents for just about anything they think might be used in the future so maybe they can cash in on the action if it happens? I don't know. Anyway, it was interesting.

The patent involved the combination of Nortriptyline and ergoloid mesylate, by some complicated name I didn't recognize until I looked it up...Hydergine.

It was based on two clinical studies in which the combination showed rapid improvements in a higher percentage of patients than is normally seen with antidepressant treatments. The majority of trial patients saw significant improvement within the first week. Doses of both meds were considerably lower than the doses they are normally prescribed at as monotherapy. Blood levels of Nortriptyline were at the extreme low end of its therapeutic range. Synergy was claimed to be the reason for the low doses.

Hydergine is known as a cognitive enhancer for dementia and alzheimers sorts of stuff. No one really knows how it works. Why does that not surprise me? I digress. Anyway, the original theory was that it increased bloodflow in the brain, and maybe it does. Another was that it links the two sides of the brain, and maybe it does. Now there is speculation it enhances dopamine and serotonin function somehow.

The studies were small, old, and obscure. I like to see overall trends, not isolated cherrypicked studies. But still it looked interesting enough.

In the book Amalgam Illness, PHd Cutler says Hydergine is one of the best things to take for both brain fog and depression.

Hmm, I have some onhand. Maybe I'll have to think that over.

I don't have the web page where I saw it but if you type in a google search "nortriptyline ergoloid mesylate patent depression" you'll probably find it easy enough.

I see the patent was issued in 1986 and expired in 2005. I wonder why no one ever did anything with it?

In some way or other it is said to be prodopamine and serotonin and anti NE.

It's one of the few things (I can get my hands on) that makes me feel any better.

How are you getting ahold of it? Is it a prescription drug currently that your doc is giving you or is there another way to access it?

It is a prescription drug in USA, though not well known and not common. Most people order it from life extension shops or nootropic shops overseas mailorder. It is primarily known as a cognitive enhancer.

It's not available in Australia so I import it.

A prescription for that is unnecessary here.
