Which drug(s) are best for severe depression?

Posted by trainspotter on August 23, 2009, at 5:50:41

Hi all, I think it's a balanced scientific community in the answers to my previous post. As it's about psycho-babble I like to have an opinion on another topic. Dysphoria, dysthemia and low grade depression is common and the GP treats with an SSRI or atypicals (sometimes ST John's wort can work), for anxious depressed. However, in some people depression is so severe that they stay in their rooms all day and night, have little appetite and sleep, ruminating about suicide. I once passed this stage. What suicidal think? Well since my childhood and 20 yr long sweet heart died, I thought I can talk to her only if I was dead too. Sanity ends, retardation appears. There can be social anxiety,PD or OCD and GAD or psychotic or retarded or PTSD. WHAT DRUG OR COMBOS ARE NEEDED FOR SEVERE DEPRESSION??
MY OPINION Calfornia Rocket fuel or
some SSRI and NARI or high enough dose of SNRI with stimulants or augmentation of SSRIs with Remeron or Desyrel (Trazodone)or Symbal(Fluoxetine and Olanzapine) or
SNRI + Antiepileptics specially Lamictal
MAOI + TCA (careful) works.
Only serotonin doesn't really help motivation and energy. Double or triple uptake inhibition/releaser? Name some drugs which can help extreme depression, I'll talk to my doc about it.

You sound like a tricyclic responder. Which ones have you tried so far, and what have you combined them with.

Traninspotter you're very knowledgeable so many forms of depression and anxiety. Ever consider simple luvox? I know not many seem to use it good for low grade depression with high level well controlled internal anxiety with low doses of benzos. Phillipa

Parnate....if that doesn't work add nortriptyline to that...Like any ad it doesn't work for everyone but some p-docs claim a very high rate of success if you're willing to work with it...for some lucky ones it kicks in within a couple weeks....good luck...if you're feeling extreme anxiety add klonopin in the appropriate doses...to much can make depression worse

I am a tricyclic responder true very true, I'll post another thread about anxiety to detail more, the thing about ADs and lifespan has once again become a fight. Forgetting all stuff being professional I think it easier to tolerate 150mg imipramine than 225mg effexor XR. Combinations tried include SSRI + TCA (doubles serum TCA levels) ; Moclobemide + TCA and Selegiline(<10MG) + TCA Alphabetically, Amitriptyline is good , okay great except for huge weight gain (INEVITABLE?) , it's a SEDATIVE, ANXIOLYTIC ANTIDEPRESSIVE. I've done upto 150mg alone and with Paxil20. Desipramine (25-75mg) being NARI combines very well with SSRIs. It's mood elevating energising. Dotheipin is good and Doxepin even at 10mg sedative. Of course I've had a trial of Imipramine, less sedating than amitrip.. NORTRIPTYLINE IS MY SPECIAL GIRL, BEING MORE NORADRENARGIC like desipramine , (25-100mg) it becomes less sedating, hardly any at >75mg. A few beers or St. John's Wort while on it didn't kill me. IT'S FOR DEPRESSION HARD TO LIFT. I read in a journal an article called "Amitriptyline 40 yeras still the best" It's true we are underestimating these drugs with effexor and Cymbalta, TCA UNLESS YOU'RE GROSSLY OBESE CAN BE WAY GOOD.

Thanks that's very supportive, in the reply I forgot about dietary supps like B5, B6, B12, Kava, SaMe, Theanine, St. John's Wort, Rhodiola, Passiflora, Valerian, and many such that are anxiolytic. Thank you for not fighting in "Do antideps extend lifespan thread". I'm starting a thread about anxiety, overlook the typos. I really don't want to fight, I already have a long long list of people I dislike, it's a support site. I've found Paxil, Celexa, Lexapro better for anxiety than Luvox. Low dose benzos I like and who doesn't? Low dose TCA work well too.

Hope I'm not on that list. Love Phillipa
