Augmenting Nardil with ?

Posted by tepi on August 24, 2009, at 21:57:46

Have anybody tried to augment Nardil with
any other AD or med ?
Can you tell me wich one do you used ?
Regarding the TCA with Nardil. Wich one do you
consider is better to use it , in what dose?
Amytriptyline?
Do you think this is more common to help
depression than social anxiety?
Im a little numb now , sorry for my lack of emotions and my bitter post

Regarding TCAs, I would avoid amitriptyline. It is too serotonergic. You are safer going with either nortriptyline or desipramine. I would recommend trying nortriptyline, the daughter drug of amitriptyline, first simply because the side effects are less harsh.

I am having some success with adding lithium. Even a dose as low as 300mg can make a difference. 450mg might be ideal.

Other things that can be added to Nardil include:

- Provigil
- Amphetamine
- Ritalin
- Antipsychotics (with the exception of Geodon).
- Wellbutrin
- Lamictal
- Trileptal
- Topamax
- Depakote

* Never mix an MAOI with any drug that inhibits the reuptake of serotonin. No SSRIs, SNRIs, clomipramine, tramadol, Geodon, Demerol, dextromethorphan, etc.

There have been reports of serotonin syndrome in association with the combination of SRIs and Remeron. Although this might be a rare occurrence, I am reluctant to recommend using Remeron in combination with an MAOI. I know it has been done, though.

Geodon is a serotonin reuptake inhibitor.

I saw that. I might be wrong in showing concern about that combination.

Interestingly, I developed serotonin syndrome from mixing Nardil with imipramine, but not Parnate with imipramine.

Imipramine is a more potent reuptake inhibitor than amitriptyline. I think there is a 2-3 fold difference in their Ki. Still, amitriptyline is strong enough to have created concern in my mind. If it is indeed safe, that would be great. More people can get well.

One would hope with the maoi elevating neurotransmitters that less tca would be needed. At least in theory.

That seems to be the case with ColoradoSnowflake. I am very surprised that she is getting such a great antidepressant response from only 25mg of nortriptyline while being combined with Parnate.

nardil and amphetamine/no-no for me

I had a hypertensive reaction with nardil and amphetamine so, I would advise you to not combine the two or combine them very, very judiciously. It seemed to be dose dependent, but still can be a risky combination.

I'm Currently on nardil and wellbutrin xr 150 mg Q am which has helped somewhat with the Nardil sedation and ADD symptoms i have.

My pdoc will not combine Nardil with most medications with a few exceptions, Lamictal, for one.

The amphetamine was my suggestion, or experiment, as I had some left over from a previous time when I took it and I read in very small doses, i.e. 5 mg, it was considered safe. I took one dose of 7.5 mg and ended up on the bathroom floor, trying to reverse the hypertension which I effectively did by taking some Nifedipine. I had my husband on call for a trip, if necessary, to the ER, which thankfully was not required.

My suggestion to my doc to combine Nardil and Provigil was rejected. He faithfully goes by the pdr which essentially says all stimulants are contraindicated with Nardil.

I also took Nardil with Nortripyline, based on an article I had read, my doc went along with that suggestion, but it's effects for me were minimal to non-existent.

Good luck. I like the nardil/wellbutrin combo so far.

> I know its difficult but does lithium would help with SP?

For true social phobia, I am not sure lithium would help. However, people often confuse social phobia with the anxiety in social situations that often occurs as part of a depressive disorder. If you find a treatment that works for the depression, the anxiety will be reduced significantly. Then, it might be necessary to utilize CBT to resolve residual anxiety, as one learns to be anxious when depressed. You have to unlearn that. In a case like this, adding lithium might indeed be helpful. The lithium is treating the depression, which, in turn, reduces anxiety.

Adding Tramadol for me did not pose any heypertensive/serotonergic related problems, however tolerance built quickly. it was very potent for SP and depression.
