Re: the best meds for anhedonia

well I am on Wellbutrin and Prozac. Selegiline did nothing for me, but it was the pill form(desyl)

Doc was thinking of adding abilify to help with the anhedonia. Also I heard Mirapex might be a good med for it.

Sadly, amphetamines are the only drugs that actually make me feel like myself dramatically improves my bad social problems. It is so bad that people think Im a downer when I am around them at social functions or parties. They will ask "Why can't you just lighten up". And everyone seems to say that I look like im unhappy and sad. Trying to force a smile on my face just makes me feel worse even. It seems its impossible to feel the rewards of normal social function or activities, all I think about it getting home so I can sleep or releax on the internet.

But I am afraid of addiction and come down issues for things like adderall or other aphetamines.. If only I could find a drug that acted like it that wasn't addcitive or had re-bound problems

:-)

Maybe you could add that to Parnate if necessary.

yea , thats the problem. I wish I could find something that worked like amphetamine does for depression and anhedonia. It was the only thing that really made me feel like myself again and made me able to socialize normally. But the come downs made me suicidal

Well it looks like my doctor is gonna try Mirapex tommorow as an add on med. I hope I will do well on it. He said the abilify had sides so he wants to try the mirapex first, if that dosen;t work then he'll probably switch to abilify. He also brought up Menamtine.

I do a lot of things that someone with severe depression "shouldn't" be able to do. We are all different.

BB we're all different no one med fits all or there wouldn't be so many options. This is how I feel. Glad it works for you. Phillipa

Why do you think Parnate would work better than other ADs. I'm curious because I am on a combo of ADs and APs and still not in remission. What's so different about parnate. I know its a MAOI...
Thanks
Zana

Probably because it acts like an amphetemine even though it isn't one.

Umm. Ok.

The thread title is, "...the best meds for anhedonia".

It wasn't, "...the med that works for everyone."

I should add to the list Ritalin, Adderall, Tyrosine, DLPA, Diflucan, Wormwood, Black Walnut Hull, St Johns Wort, Rhodiola Rosea (Mind, Body, Spirit brand only).

Obviously none will work for everyone. But if someone is wondering what the best meds for "anhedonia" are, those are top candidates standing somewhat higher than most any other reasonable treatments. Some of those actually aren't meds but I thought deserved to be listed as well since they can be quite effective.

On the topic of Parnate, I believe it has two things going for it:
1. It works on all the neurotransmitters equally, unlike most others which are unbalanced. And it doesn't just increase them at the synapse, but increases them globally.
2. It has a short-lived (several hours) stimulant mechanism.

I didn't list dopamine agonists because they seem to be too problematic longterm for both physical and mental reasons. I didn't list Selegiline because everyone I have ever heard of it that was on it longer than a year got the same apathetic anhedonia thing that SSRIs commonly do. Despite their longterm problems and backfires, they do have short-term anti-anhedonia potential.

Oh, almost forgot. Hardly ever heard of. Normally thought of for sex. But anti-anhedonia, yeah. Yohimbe bark. Very difficult one to manage though. Too much equals agitation, nervousness, insomnia. I combined crumbs of this years ago with my Prozac and it was like waking from the dead.

PetersKeys,

Did you ever find relief for your anhedonia? I'm suffering from this, too. I heard Adrafinil helped some people with this problem.

Best,
