It was the painkillers that probably killed him rather than the benzos. My doc told me it would be pretty hard to overdose and die with benzos. I tried swalling a bottle of 100 clonazepam tablets once but all that happned was i slept for 20 hours.

Basically, the answer is no; you can't die on just benzo's. You could get into a temporary coma, yes, but death? Nah. When mixing our little benzo friends with some drugs, though, you could, very well die. Indeed, if you mix high dose benzo's with high dose opiates, you may stop breathing, which isn't very good for your brain, not to mention your heart and other vital organs.

There IS a way to die on just benzo's, though: when you're really, seriously addicted, you could theoretically die by ditching your littler benzo friends out of the blue and just like that! Really. In this respect, benzo addiction is as bad as alcohol addiction; physically, they are a lot more serious than any opiate withdrawal (including heroin).

Er.. You're not contemplating a premature departure of this wonderful planet, are you?

While it is sad that this occurred and I'm not dismissing the pain that must have drove you there, it isn't appropriate to post exact amounts of substances that can cause harm or death even if it is related to a personal story.

As for MJ, there were numerous substances and one of the large culprits was a short acting anaesthetic called propofol used frequently for hospital procedures and not available as a prescription item outside such environments, at least from what I recall from reports.

This was misused for inducing sleep which is completely a violation of its intended purpose and tantamount malpractice.

As to answer the previous question, only if you are worried about taking medication and nothing else related to suicide or attempts at such -- benzodiazepines properly used are among, but probably not the least harmful substances used in psychiatry because of how long they have been around.

I won't answer the question about "what kind of dead". Any CNS system depressant, especially multiple ones have the -potential- of respiratory depression, or lung collapse which requires immediate hospitalization. That means, take your medication properly.

If this is different, and you need guidance in a crisis, please try to contact a hotline or go to a hospital -- I know it is probably different in your country as to what to do. Or continue to hold on and talk to people on here who want to help you.

Ugh. Now I'm caught between a rock and a hard place about responding again.... Yes, you can overdose and have respiratory depression on any substance that potentially is capable and I'm not going to go list these things.

A temporary coma ?? Its a wonderful thing that a number of people come out of comas, but what has happened to the brain and body whilst in one only the ventilators and a fly on the hospital wall could tell the story.

Bottom line is: eating a bag full of benzo's isn't gonna kill you, while eating [xxx] of, say, acetaminophen, surely is.

I once took 500 .5 pills of klonopin and I am still here today. No coma, no ventilator. If i had combined them with alcohol it would have been a very different story.

Tepi, don't do anything impulsive okay? Are under the care of someone right now? Tell them how you are feeling if you are indeed suicidal. I'm sorry that you are feeling so bad.

I realize that was an inexact amount, but I thought this might be a good time to remind everyone not to use this site to exchange information that people could use to harm themselves.
