dextrat vs dexedrine

Posted by Garnet71 on June 23, 2009, at 2:14:18

The new PDoc I've been seeing gave me dexedrine (the capsules) instead of dextrat (tablets). I did not notice till I got home from the pharmacy. He said the word dextrat, don't know how I ended up with dexedrine.

I checked real quick on Wiki and it seems they both are supposed to be d-amphetamine--the same exact drug?. But I swear it does not work the same. I haven't taken one in at least a week now, so I'd normally feel something when I haven't taken it in a while; instead, i took 1--it made me tired--so I took 2 and got more tired. I never took the other ones close to the same time-i'd wait at least 4 hrs, usually 6. But after 2 hrs, i took the 2nd and still felt really tired.

I don't know if I'm just sleep deprived or if its the capsule vs. tablet. ?

And for a sch. II med, can a doctor call in a new one to replace it? I mean you can't just give the old one back to the pharmacy can you?

it's better to just ask for the generic form of them, because both of them are out of patent, especially Dexedrine.

Garnet according to the timing on you thread did you take the med at 2am? Maybe if you're sleep deprived and it's late that's why. Not that familiar with this family of meds but will give a quick google. No can't return a med to a pharmacy tried that with an unopened bottle once. This pharmacy said if you walk out the door with the med can't return. So I check my meds before leaving now. Phillipa

Sounds like they gave u spansules which are longer acting and are not dose for dose equivalent. This happened to me once and I called the pharmacy (it was their error) so they replaced it with the correct script. I would check with them ASAP so they remember what occured- make sure you talk with the person who gave them to you or whomever filled the bottle if you can. Good luck!

thanks. My PDoc said to wait a couple days. He agrees with you, Phillipa, that I'm probably just exhausted considering everything that's happened over the past 2 weeks. And I've been up till 4,5,6 every night with mind draining classes and homework. I get up at 8 for school and usually get home at 6:30, screw around till 8 or 9 before I start. There is no break. Not even for a day. Of course I'm not even close to how productive I used to be, so I waste time.

FM--how can you tell if its the spanules? The script says "d-amphetamine 10 MG CAP SA" subsituted for Dexedrine". Is that what you mean? The stuff I had before said d-amphetamine substitud for Dextrat.

I don't like it. It makes me feel a bit nervous, while making me feel tired at the same time. I start yawning a lot after I take it, and it doesn't seem to affect dopamine or help with concentration like the dextrat. It just feels miserable. Should I call him back if after a couple days, this doesn't change? It seems useless to take it; yet, the other one really helped.

At first I thought it was the pharmacy who did that-CVS said they didn't carry it so I took it somewhere else. I originally thought they just gave it to me cause they didn't have the other one. But my doctor said its essentially the same thing. But why not prescribe the other one if its the same? Maybe he is just used to using this particular version.

If its in capsules it's spansules (which I think you said) If it's a pill it's not.... spansules are designed to release a certain amount of medication early on and then the rest later in the day for a longer effect.... I liked dexedrine spansules better but that was me- if you like the dexostrat it is not exactlyt the same as dexedrine (from what I remember)....
