Best meds for Social Phobia/Anxiety???

Posted by Zillhouse on May 10, 2009, at 1:54:12

-I'm afraid of meeting new people
-I'm afraid of speaking in front of people
-I'm afraid of being put on the spot or questioned
-I'm afraid that when I start speaking I'm going to lose my train of thought, panic and then look like a crazy person.
-my thoughts are always jumbled and putting together coherent sentences through speech can be very difficult and extremely anxiety provoking
-I know I am intelligent but I can't seem to express myself properly through speech.
-I can't look someone in the eye while I'm speaking or I lose my focus
-I am hyper concerned of criticism
-I basically don't want to go anywhere or do anything

thus I avoid most social interactions, and I don't chase any of my dreams. Sounds great right???

What would be my best med/alternative options?

Thanks

Zill

Hi Zill,
Because I'm lazy and in lieu of repeating myself.

Benzos worked for many years for me. Now they don't but 40 years they did. Phillipa

I think Jedi's recommendation is a good one - Nardil and clonazepam. However, I built up tolerance to Benzos fairly quickly. I have to take treble the dose of Valium now compared to when I first started taking the drug, just to achieve the same effects. Otherwise, it just doesn't help my anxiety.

An alternative could be Seroxat or maybe clomipramine, however they probably wouldn't be quite as effective as the Nardil. You may also find that you have to take a second medication to boost these two, maybe a low dose atypical antipsychotic.

A "big gun" treatment plan:

- Start with irreversible MAOI. "Gold standard"
target dose of 1mg/kg phenelzine.

- Add one or more of the following, if necessary:

(1) d-amphetamine: up to 0.75mg/kg/day
(2) buprenorphine, start at 0.3mg-2mg qid
(3) clonazepam, up to 2mg/day

[rough] placement along a spectrum:

anxiolysis <--(3)--(2)--(1)--> assertiveness
