Just problems with anxiety and phobias

Posted by Cseagraves on April 13, 2009, at 20:05:57

I have tried just about every ssri, tca, benzos work temporarily (have tried all), but are not strong enough for the extreme anxiety and panic and agorphobia that I have. (I would have to take xanax all day long to get a hold on this, which I wont do) Can't stop the intrusive thoughts. I'm talking extreme shaking all day long, scared to leave house much less get out of bed. Have lost all motivation and energy. Am afraid I am dying of everything. Loss of all appetite. Stomach is constantly in knots.

I seem not to respond well to ssri's, but if you know of one that works better on anxiety other than zoloft, prozac or lexapro, please let me know. (had either no reation to these or allergice reactions) Was seriously considering Nardil, but still unsure because of side effects.

My dx is extreme GAD, phobia and panic, not depression (maybe just underlying depression due to anxiety of not being able to do as I please anymore)

This has not been for me an illness that I have had for a long time. It just all hit about 2 years ago. Maybe someone could suggest a combo of some kind.

Please help!

Courtney

A medication like valproate (epival) might help.

I don't know maybe valporate like said above. What about cannabis? i hear thats good for anxiety. Sometimes bad though too.
but yea the mood stabilizers take away anxiety pretty good. Trileptal relieves my anxiety. But i still avoid things.
what about a antipsychotic? those can releive major anxieties for sure. seroquel calmed me down SO MUCH.
I've never taken nardil, but I presume it'll have alot of side effects.
Yes, I agree that taking Xanax wouldnt be the best option. However, it would be a good med to fall back on if nothings working and you need a break.
You'd be a good candidate for an antipsychotic though. They can take away a ton of anxiety.
Good luck

Or Depakote?

There's a theory that panic disorders originate in the same part of the brain as seizures, so either of those or Klonopin might help.

You said you'd tried all benzos though, so I guess you've already tried Klonopin.

i think some of your fear of nardil side effects might be caused by your anxiety disorder actually...not saying it doesn't have side effects, but it seems especially worrying to you

It's unclear to me what meds you have tried. I agree that some of the atypical antipsychotics can be helpful with anxiety. Depakote made me feel like a zombie but boy did it eradicate nay anxiety so I would agree that the mood stabilizers would be a good catagory to explore. Gabapentin works well for anxiety for me. As does klonopin. I hear clonodine can be helpful but I have no personal experience with it. I think you need a good psychopharm consult, work with someone who can go through all these options with you and come up with a plan.

What side-effects of Nardil are you most concerned about? It sounds like Nardil is worth a shot. What have you got to lose?

The dangers of MAOIs are vastly overhyped, and Nardil is the least likely among the MAOIs (less likely than Parnate, at least) to cause a hypertensive crisis, if that's your main concern. Orthostatic hypotension would probably be the most bothersome side-effect.

Buspar + ssri or klonopin + ssri. I have never gotten anxiety under control with monotherapy - it's combos all the way!
Be well,
