Is Zyban and Wellbutrin the same?

Posted by Alexanderfromdenmark on March 29, 2009, at 6:33:54

I know that Zyban and wellbutrin contain the same active ingredient, but I'm wondering whether the formulation is different somehow. Wellbutrin isn't avaible here in Denmark, but Zyban is. The reason for trying it is depression and not smoking cessation.

So I can fx take 300 mg Zyban and it will work exactly like 300 mg Wellbutrin XL?

Sorry, for needing it spelled out clearly. I just need to be sure, they havn't tampered with the formulation in such a way that the DA & NE effects have been downregulated.

That's a good question. I don't think the formula is different but I don't know if Zyban is time released the way Wellbutrin XL is.

In australia zyban is the SR version of wellbultrin, i dare say it would be the same there as well. So you would have to take 150mg twice a day of zyban to have the same as wellbutrin xl 300mg.

As far as I know also Zyban is Wellbutrin SR. It was also patented, but for smoking cessation. When neither was generic, it was prescribed offlabel sometimes by psychiatrists for patients who couldn't afford or get Wellbutrin SR. As for XL I don't know. Both I believe are now generic.
