What Topamax dose for weight loss?

Posted by tygereyes on April 4, 2006, at 16:18:26

For those of you who take Topamax, at what dose did you start losing weight?

Most studies I've read seem to say 100 mg is where people start losing weight.

I don't lose weight on Topamax, and I don't think it's a good medication for that purpose. I'm on 100mg, have been on as much as 150 only. Maybe it would do so if I were on more, but I get too stupid and tired on higher doses.

I don't remember what my dose was except that it wasm't near that high. I was lucky to string together a sentence, and I am a writer! One of the lovely and bizarre side effects that will pass if you can get that far is the fact that all your education goes down the toilet and suddenly simple words and phrases just escape you. Really, really weird. Sorry but you asked about food. I lost and lost and lost. Nigt time would come and I would suddenly remember I didn't eat and the next day was not much different. I think I lost a good 20lbs while being on it for only 1 month and it hasn't come back. If you want to lost weight THIS is the drug to take. Oh and just on an aside another one of those freaky Topomax side effects was that all sode starts tasting like piss. No, really. But that fades too.

Good Luck!

JH,

A second to all the side effects you mentioned. Maybe the food tasting like crap is why people lose weight. It made soda, orange juice, and other beverages really taste awful. The only thing was that it didn't help me to lose weight.
I stopped taking it because of the word problems.

Isn't that the strangest side effect, not being able to string two words together? You could be a Harvard graduate and suddenly you turn into a 10 year old. And a dumb 10 year old at that. Between that and the disgusting tasting beverages I think Topomax qualifies as the weirdest drug on the market. It's a weight-loss a'go-go though for most. A day in the life of a Topomax user....

Me: "hi hon, your going to McDonalds? Get me...umm..what the hell is that called...get me some meat on a bun with cheese, 'K?"

Hubby: "Ummm are we talking cheeseburger?"

"YES!! That's what it is called, and get me some pissing tasting cola drink." "Ah hell forget the whole thing I'm not hungry anyway."

LOL, weird weird drug.

Sorry for my own bad news, but I was on a dose of 300mg for bipolar, and I didn't lose any weight. I didn't have other side effects, either, but I couldn't feel it do anything. HOpe you have better luck!

I'm only on 25 right now ... I figure I'll go up to 100 and see what happens. It's an old script - I'm kind of relapsing into anorexia and playing around with self-medication. I don't really need the drug for the weight loss, I can do that on my own, but .. well .. if it makes it faster ....

I started losing weight on very low doses of Topamax as I was titrating up. However, I think it might have been due to metabolic acidosis which is a dangerous side effect for Topamax. I stopped due to other severe side effects, but never knew if I had metabolic acidosis as they never ordered a lab test. I would not use it as a weight loss measure . There are other steps you can take. See this thread:

LOL, great post!!

I'm on the topamax now.. Started right at 200mg, haven't lost a pound, but when I was on it before, the weight FLEW off... I think I got it wrong this time around and I was at 300-400 last time. Time for a record check.

Funny thing, BEFORE I was taking this med, I suffered from not being able to remember the names of common household objects and never really knew what caused it, but, I could remember a face I had seen for a split second, once, drunk, blindfolded, back 20 years earlier. Go figure. I often swap my kids names around.. my father did the exact same thing. Genetics? Stupidity? I did just turn 40?...Hmmm..

For me 300mg works for weight loss, especially if I take it all in the afternoon. It's not a drug I would want to stay on permanently though!

The taste...yeah...strange side-effect for sure...probably why a lot of people loose weight on it!!!

For the numb-dumb feeling and the search words...that's relative to the dosage you take... I never got more than 150mg... but I know that taking ALONE, without any others meds who act on the Gaba...it's not so bad...it can decrease a little bit the cognitives abilities...at 300mg I don't know if it worse or not...probably...not sure...

I loose weight before on the Topamax when I augment my dosage at 100mg/day...

I start the Topamax, 1 week ago, for a second try, almost 5 years later...The first time I was not on benzos drugs or addicted to them but I remember that my Doctor had to have me a complete check up because I had stranges sensations, pins and needles, cold hands and feets, but also increase anxiety reaction in social events or things that get me upset...fight or flight effect...anyway really strange...

I start last week again at 25mg day one and jump already on the 50mg boat the day after. What I Can say, I probably do a mistake by asking this med again. I can already told you that my cognitives abilities decrease, I search my words, have a lot of difficulty writing, my hands shake, I look like an old man of 80 yo who take too much meds at the same time....my anxiety level is worse than ever...And adding the Valium to it, because 5 years later i'm addicted to the Valium, it's making me more tired and more confusing...

For the weight loose, 50mg is too low, so I drop out today the "doopamax"...I don't think I need to concentrate on loosing some pounds for now, I need focusing on reducing my anxiety level, general and social anxiety...that's the mean goal to achieve...

I have a lot of others way to loose weight than use a pill that will make me feel numb and think like i'm a child of 10yo...I'm already a lot affected by the Valium, who by itself, decrease a lot my cognitives abilities, I don't need another one on the top of it...

Again, that's my fault, I ask the PDoc to have it for a second ride... I don't know why I don't ask for something else, something I never try like Sabatril (Vigabatrin)...or valporic acid...still don't know if it's good for anxiety or not???

Anyone have a suggestion about the Sabril, Lamictal or te valporic acid??? (Not the Neurotin or Lyrica, I give enought on them...)

Ho I forget...this week I go to the McDo...and the funny thig is that my friend ask me what I wanted to eat, since I didnt have money...I was looking at the menu, I Was reading the words double cheeseburger, but I was unable to say it...I Was like..."I want the thing, you know with ground beef and cheese..."...He was like "What...are you crazy..."..lol Stupid...I think the word is good... Strange no? I still wonder why I ask about returning on this med. I know i'm a lot turned into my recent weight gain from my last tries of Lexapro and Clomipramine, but I can loose weight without that "stupid" med...who can be good for someone who need a good mood stabiliser for sure...but that's not for me...anyway...I just remember it after I post the other post... Sometimes I feel just like I lost my head somewhere...and I can't find it...lol

i think most importantly, decide for sure you want to take something before you start it, and then give it several weeks, even if side effects come up. don't start something for a week and then realize you should be trying something else, or you never really are trying anything.

That's true d/r...and it's why I think about it all day long yesterday and I say to myself...well you have nothing too lose, even if you can't remember the words sometimes... and your hands shake...what you can do ...nothing can be worse anyway...SO ...I start again the Topamax...75mg now... I'm not stable I know...maybe it will help on that side, since it's a mood stabiliser!!! lol I laught about it...but that's not funny...I begin to be tired of the situation...

As a reminder for you...like you ask me...is it possible to told me what I have to ask for my next blood test exactly??? I have my appointment soon... Thanks d/r!!!

Bye!

I just joined this message board just to respond to this string of posts! Boy, do I feel SO much better! I was googling around finding out more about Topamax and stumbled accross your string and relating to everyone! Thank you for the comic relief and making me feel normal!

I have been taking it for 6 weeks and am only up to 75mg 2x a day (150 total) for migraines (that weren't being controlled by other stuff) My nuerologist wants me to increase my 25 mg every week until the migraines are gone and not go above 200mg a day. She wants me to stay at 150mg if I can. I just had a small migraine last week (but it was a itty bitty manageble one).

My heels tingle. I am as dumb as a sack of rocks. I look at a pen and say, "can you hand me that thing that writes?". I feel that I had a stroke! Soda tastes salty too. I figured topamax was a better option than depakote becuase I thought maybe I would lose a couple of pounds.

I am hoping for the weight loss bonus. A colleague told me she starts to see the real weight loss at 300mg a day but it is usually for folks who are 60-80lbs overweight. So, I am going to stick with it and give it a college try to 200mg and just be a little stupid for awhile hoping it will wear off. I think of it as a humbling experience.

My husband is getting great comedy from it. I do fine on important stuff it is just the daily recall is where I have difficulty. Here is another example- "Do you have those things that turn on the car"... "You mean the keys"

Thanks for allowing me to post!

This sounds really strange but I SWEAR it works! My doctor said I would find several side affects disappear if I took my medicine with orange juice. My numbness of face, bad taste of soda & other foods all went away when I started taking the Topamax with orange juice. Try it, it really worked. Haven't noticed a big problem with words, but then I have always had that!
