What's next for me???

Posted by maoi_wowee on March 11, 2009, at 22:16:21

I've taken all of the usual suspects for major atypical depression and have just come off of Marplan after nearly a year.

I have done the better on MAOIs than on anything else, though Nardil's weight gain was too much to handle, Marplan has conked out and Parnate did nothing for my social anxiety.

I was going to start back up on Parnate after washing out of Marplan, but I'm thinking it is surely worthwhile to seek out alternatives before going back on it.

Any thoughts on what would be good to try now?

Thanks!!!

Maybe Emsam as you could customize the size? Love Phillipa

i guess as a theoretical matter i would prefer trying some augments when something gives out as opposed to playing merry-go-round

Maoi,

Please don't say it. I'm certainly not the one for advice. I always ask you for advice. If Marplan pooped out on you after you said it was so wonderful, I feel totally lost.

Called the doctor today to ask if I could try the Marplan again, maybe starting a lower dosage. When we tried the 10mgs per day before, I had a pretty bad reaction. I know that he will probably suggest starting out on 5mgs a day.

Do you think starting out on 2.5 a day might be even better or do you think thats pretty much a waste of time?

I talked to my pharmacist about Ensam, which seemed pretty cool, but without insurance it would cost me $560.00 per month. Can't afford that one.

Thanks,

Courtney

Courtney,

Try out selegiline (oral emsam without the patch - comes in pill/liquid/candy) same stuff hun...just goes into your blood different...although studies and preference of patients seems to prefer the patch but I dunno...i'm always sceptical until I try or know someone personally who tried and have read lots.

i used selegiline sublingually (better absorbtion, less possibility for hypertensive tyramine crisis) - its sort of bitter tasting, but i got used to it. i was broke so that made it quit cheap. i did not find it good like parnate though. i'd probably recommend the marplan. what side effects wereyou having? i sort of wonder if titrating up fast is better, thats what i did, i felt really foggy for a week, and then it went away, instead of dragging it out.

hey there,

I would certainly not give up hope on Marplan before giving it a solid try!!! The MAOIs are all great drugs in my book...My Marplan experience was very positive overall and I stayed on it longer than all but a small handful of the other meds I've been on over the past 16 years.

Maoi,

If you don't mind me asking, what was your original diagnosis?

Someone here mentioned Ensam to me, have you tried that one. Apparently patches are expensive, but oral pills or liquid are not.

Don't know now if I want to start up on a maoi. Seems like they poop out just as easily as ssri's.

Was thinking today that I might ask my pdoc to try zoloft again. It worked wonders for me years ago the first time this happened to me. I know that everyone has different experiences with meds, but I never experienced fatigue, weight gain or anything like that on zoloft. I might try one more ssri before considering maoi.

From the post I have read, titrating up on maoi's can be just as difficult as ssris. Am concerned about maois because I have blood pressure problems and allergy issues. (Not sure what I could take for my allergies.)

For me, I can usually tell if ssri is doing a good thing or bad thing within the first week or two.

Am so confused now. Also read some stories on www.patientslikeme.com who were also on maois. The increase on these meds seems so gradual until you might reach whatever dosages might be right for you and during the titrating stage, it seems like you go through feeling really crappy alot. I am beginning to wonder if there is really that big a difference. Of course, alot of people might require more meds than I do depending on their condition.

I just have a little SAD, GAD, PTSD and agoraphobia.(Have also started seeing a therapist for CBT) I don't think I need a butt load of meds to get this under control. That's why I asked what your diagnosis was. I don't want to take antipsychotics (one's I tried are Geoden and Seroquel, both were awful and I'm not real sure why the pdoc I was seeing at the time was giving me these for my condition) Hated trazadone and remeron makes my ears ring, gives me an awful headache and really didn't help with anxiety for a long period of time.

So I guess that is why I just keep looking for a med that is geared specifically for what I've got. I don't want alot of other stuff thrown into the mix that I don't need. I think I just need either an ssri that will work (which zoloft seems to be made more for my condition) or an maoi. The only other thing a need is a benzo for back and sleep until I can get these issues under control.

How long were you on Marplan before you felt leveled out consistantly? How often did you up dosages? Why do you think this pooped out on you?

Hope all is well. Please let me know what is going on with you.

Stay O.K.

Courtney
