Best Atypical Antipsychotic - weight + sedation

Posted by Pete1968 on February 5, 2009, at 18:48:40

Hallo all, I am currently taking Olanzapine 5mg (Zyprexa) for anxiety as a component of depression and following a bout of Major Depression. I am not Bipolar, just plain old Unipolar but with pretty bad anxiety/panic. I am also on 150mg of Venlafaxine for the depression with partial success.

My question is this, which atypical antipsychotic in users experiences, is best for avoiding weight gain yet is beneficial for GAD? I have never tried Quetiapine or Risperidone or Ziprasidone or Aripiprazole and am interested in knowing something of the differences between their side effect profiles.

Thanks, Pete.

Geodon and Abilify are the most weight neutral Atypicals from the research I've done.

Good luck!

I tried abilify. I've got a great deal of anxiety with depression. I was terribly anxious on abilify. I tried it because of the lack of weight gain associated with it. I went back on low dose seroquel, but the sedation sucks. I am less anxious though.

I'd be curious to see what people say about geodon.

good luck to you :-)

Thats exactly the kind of info I want to hear, thank you obsidian. So one down to Abilify for the increased anxiety. And Seroquel for you but with sedation. Thanks for your input mate and good luck to you as well.

For me Seroquel... it is simply the best , no weigth gain , just a little bit of sleepines
no other side efect . I reached 300 mg

In real life, too.

Abilify has produced mild weight gain in some people, though. I'm currently taking 20mg of Abilify and I am still managing to lose the weight nortriptyline and Nardil put on me.

My doctor has an buttload of Seroquel samples, so many that he has to throw them out, at all doses too, ones higher than he ever prescribes he said as well. I've just been afraid of the Seroquel weight gain/diabetes deal.

My brother said Seroquel was the only thing that ever worked on his anxiety, but made him sleep 12 hours a day and have a ravenous appetite.

Maybe I should try it?

First I'm going to see how the clomipramine + perphenazine combination works I suppose. My doctor the possibility of TD is decreased if I'm taking the clomipramine.

What dosage did he get up to?

With Seroquel, the higher the dosage, the less soporific (sleep-inducing) it is. It might even reduce his cravings for food. I guess everyone will have a different "sweet-spot" with regard to dosage.

Hi. I find Abilify good for depression, motivation, and anxiety. It is not too sedating for me. I know many people find it makes them anxious, but I find it somewhat helpful in that regard. The only drawback - slow, creeping weight gain. I'm trying low dose Geodon, but the jury's still out for me.

ive tried risperdal and that seemed to have no effect on me, i've tried seroquel and that worked Great for anxiety and sleep but then soon caused cognitive blunting so i had to stop, then i more recently tried geodon for depression. doc started me at 80 and really didn't touch depression so he upped me to 160, i soon became mildly psychotic on it, which for me includes increased anxiety.

overall zyprexa is my great standby and has worked from day one.
there are times i've taken it and gained nothing and times i've taken it and gained 25lbs. i think my key is to kickstart it with drinking tons of water when i start it. then i dont seem to crave the carbs or have late night eating binges.

i would still like to try abilify (since theres still one left to try). i have heard positive things about it. but i think theres something with the dosage regarding anxiety, i'm not sure if i remember this right but i think it can be more 'activating' in lower doses?? sorry maybe someone can chime in to make sure this is right.

best wishes.
b2c.

Thanks for asking.

I am doing fairly well, considering that I am still underdosed on desipramine. My doctor is being very cautious during this titration. He's kind of afraid to go to the 300mg I need because it is being combined with Parnate. There really is no danger for me, as I have been on this combination in the past. But I gotta play ball with the doctor. He is too good for me to lose by ignoring his orders. It is just a matter of patience and having to wait another month before I feel very well.

One day at a time, right?

Scott,

What is your regimen these days? I assume you are taking the Abilify, and that you switched from Nortripyline to Desipramine?
