Maplan - day 2. Not feeling so well.

Posted by Cseagraves on February 6, 2009, at 14:48:25

O.K.

I'm trying to keep a daily journal of what I'm feeling. Yesterday 1st dose of marplan (10 mgs.) Extreme headache and nauseau all day. Total loss of appetite, dizzyness, no energy, shaky, upset stomach, still feel anxietal. Slept o.k. last night, but had to take 1 zanax with some melatonin.

No problems with blood pressure. 110/70.

Today - no headache, blood pressure still o.k. Felt so-so this morning. Still no appetite. As day goes on, feel worse. Had to end up taking half a zanax (.50) to calm down nerves.

Hoping that this is just initial effects and things will get better over the next couple of days. Is it normal to feel this crappy going on an maoi. (Even though I usually felt pretty bad going on an ssri, although not quite like this)

I have to admit I think my nerves are playing a big role and I am trying to back down off of my zanax (slowly) at the same time because anytime I take more than 1 mg of zanax, I get a headache. Am wondering if I am experiencing some withdrawal from that.

Would love some feedback on your experiences the first week of an maoi.

Thanks,

Courtney

>Would love some feedback on your experiences the first week of an maoi.

First week of nardil (from my notes):

day 1-3: very dizzy, especially when getting up and moving even just sitting and watching tv. minor headaches, no nausea though. strange vision issues like minor blurring, bad insomnia, bad anxiety including pulses of severe irritation

day 4-8: very euphoric feeling, strange sense of calm and relaxation, very talkative, smiling alot, laughing alot, huge wide eyed pupils and spaced out gazes. incredible dizzyness. insomnia, minor anxiety (actually minimal negative side effects during this period)

day 9 and on until my dose increase:
increasing anxiety and irritability, occassional outburst of anger. euphoria rapidly diminishing. dizzyness, headaches returning. side effects worsing until 2 weeks in (my dose increase in which side effects diminished slightly then returned with increasing severity until about 1 month in....nardil kicks in: calm, muscle relaxation, clarity in my head, focus increased)

Sorry hun, no experience with marplan but nardil is close to marplan in the way it works and somewhat in how it feels (from what i hear).

Just hang in there ok...nardil is weird (my perception anyway and perhaps maios in general) in that it never ceases to surprise or amaze me. just when I think its done (pooped out or lossing all its efficacy) it pops back up to pick me up. nardil, for me, has a predictable stimulatory feeling (an interesting feeling in my muscles) that coincides with the coming on of a good day and this feeling comes and goes day by day, week by week. As dose is upped its reliable and predictable feeling for yep its working. At 75mg now (considered a high dose) its good effect has changed feeling to this incredible energy/hyperness (although could be the addition of trazodone for sleep) with better AD effect. Might just coincide with two weeks now at 75 (ie its coming on again)...so like I said...interesting med that really surprises me when I need it. Hope Marplan works similar for you :-)

keep smilin,

myco

Hi Courtney,

Could it be that you are experiencing some sort of hypertension?
I'm trying to get adjusted to Eldepryl (Selegine) and am going through the same motions as you are. Eventhough I'm on a very low dose (1.25 mg every 2 days - taken sublingually).
From what I've read, it takes a few days for the body to adjust. Maybe you can lower the dose in the meantime?

Love,
Maria

Hey Maria,

I don't think it's my blood pressure. Have been taking it several times a day and it is stabile at 110/70.

After reading what myco said above, it made me feel better. From what I've read about Marplan, it seems to take about 4 to 6 weeks to get you stabilized. I just didn't expect to have these inital effects this bad as it was supposed to have the least side effects. I guess this should not be such a big surprise considering how sensitive I was to ssris.

Will keep hoping that things will get better day to day. Am just so looking forward to the day where things get level.

Thanks,

Courtney

Myco,

Thanks so much for your post. Made me feel alot better. I was hoping not to have major effects going on this med, but am not surprised considering how sensitive I have always been to ssris.

After I took .5 of zanax, the nervousness seemed to settle down. So, maybe I will need to tweek the Marplan a little bit with small doses of zanax until it gets into my system good.

Would love a couple of euphoric days though!!! :-)

Pdoc has me on 10mg a day for a week and then will increase to 20mg per day next week. Did you feel better or worse whenever your dosage was upped?

Patience. I just gotta have patience.

Courtney

Hiya Courtney,

Try not to let the sides get to ya, seriously. Maois are a bumpy ride especially when you start. It WILL get better and when that baby kicks in....ooo watch out lol, it will surprise you. Caught me totally off guard...from blah I feel like crap one night to OMG whats happening to me the next day. Truely an amazing start, even the bad was a trip. Actually for me the dizzyness was, and I know this is weird, enjoyable to some degree...I would often close my eyes sittin on the couch listen to the tv show 'House' (ya i'm a med tv show freak) just letting my head roll and circle back and around in this weird enjoyable state of mind lol. I know i'm strange.

For me I was so sick of dealing with anxiety and having relationship after relationship destroyed by it, no friends because I was a miserable insecure sob who rarely smiled and overreacted to almost everything all tensed up with anxiety and no fun to be around. I said f*ck this...and I went on a crusade to save what I could of my social life and mental state. Found maois are where I should be from here (personal experiences from those sharing similar symptoms as me) and through the scientific literature. Knew the drawbacks...said bring it baby...do what ever nasty thing you want to do to me nardil, im gonna beat you and harness your power LOL. ugh, lame huh. So I just grinned and beared the sides, got through it and was pleasently rewarded and you will be to Courtney.

lol ya the euphoria from nardil is a fav among nardil users who respond. dont go driving or anything though during this euphoric experience lol big spacey eyed pupils and cognitively out of it will land you a big slap on the bum by the cops...well at least if youre lucky anyway lol ;-)

yep, going up on dosage had effect on my side effect feelings. The first day or two after going up the sides actually diminish a little...as if somekind of initial chemical response is minimizing them. Then they go up and do they ever. Quite intense at times but then kind of slow towards the end just before the med kicks in. for nardil this was this stimulation I got in my muscles, coming on making me go 'oh ok here we go whats this' then wam nardil kicks in. The stimulation coincides with good days...actually predictable how my day was gonna be based on whether or not I had this lil tingle in my muscles. Changed day to day...not all days are good on maois Courtney...you will have bad days to even at full response...ups and downs are lifes norm though :-). But when the dose is stable and be prepared to raise it a few times cuz it will feel stable then diminish...then you wait (im talkin weeks) before deciding to move up (literature will tell you effective dose range) to at least the minimum effective dose (60mg for nardil). When it stablizes the sides almost all go away apart from some dizzyness and, for me, hella insomnia.

All in all, I am totally happy and satisfied with pushing myself to find a dr for nardil rx. Man was I tired of the ssri merry-go-round.

Myco,

Did anyone ever tell you what a great person you are? Your positivity is inspiring and I will refer back to your post as I go through this.

And no, you are not weird. It's great to see that you can still roll with the punches and keep your sense of humor. :-)

I wish I could follow the same advice I give to other people here about patience and know that things will get better. I still have major control issues with this condition (I really hate calling it an illness) that I myself need to let go of.

My hubby and son put together a rock band and they get to play their first initial "gig" this weekend. Other than the side effects going on today, I am upset that I won't be able to go because the drive is an hour away from the house and that is way beyond my safety zones as of right now. It's all I can do to go to the grocery store that is just 5 minutes down the road. LOL!!!

My son, who is very understanding, kissed me on the head, gave me a big hug and told me not to worry about it because he knows that I will eventually get to watch him.

It just breaks my heart that this illness has effected me to this degree. So i think this has made today a little worse. I just want to be able to get back out there and go, go, go like I used to.

But, it's cool. I'll get there. Appreciating you letting me know about the ups and downs going on these maois in the months to come. Not sure what the therapeutic dose is on Marplan, but will look that one up. Sides effects aren't so bad, except mainly the nauseau.

Hope things stay good with you and I will be posting my progress in the days to come because I know there were some others here considering Marplan.

Take Care,

CS
