Mixed mood - definition?

Posted by Cady on December 10, 2008, at 6:13:06

Can someone give me an explanation or examples of mixed mood states? I am not sure whether they are unique mood types (I have seen the terms "agitated depression" and "irritable mania") or periods of rapid switching between depression and mania (I have seen this definition too).

I have the latter but have been calling it ultradian cycling. I also have some unique mood states which I have difficulty describing, as they don't seem to fit into any one category. I want to be able to describe them better to my doctor. I've tried giving specific examples, but these can be difficult for another person to interpret, because it is hard to understand what is normal for a person, and what a particular mood looks like on them.

The term, "mixed-state", is usually reserved for descriptive use in bipolar disorder. An episode can resemble an agitated and hostile depression or a high-energy, but dysphoric mania. It is an uncomfortable state to be in. It is not fun. It is not euphoric. People in mixed-states often display episodes of hostility and rage.

I guess the bottom line is that a mixed-state presents with a cluster of symptoms fitting the criteria for both depression and mania. This is a single state, not an oscillation between two states.

Anger with anxiety is a mixed mood with restlessness? Am I right or wrong? Love Phillipa

I don't want to highjack a thread, but the more I think about it, my rage and irritability I experienced as stated in my previous thread, was a mixed episode brought on by the Cymbalta. Day one off it and already I feel better..although I'm keeping a watchful eye as I'm almost feeling a tad hypomanic (although right now it's a welcome relief).

For the original poster, perhaps giving your pdoc a scenario, sort of a one day in your life, may help your doctor grasp what you're experiencing. Putting a mixed episode into words is harder than one would think.

Ugh, I had a mixed mood state in summer 2007

basically it lasted about 4 weeks, and consisted of me constantly having rapid thoughts, and high agitation, but low motor activity and fatigue. I was very irritable and had depressive thoughts. Unfortunately they were racing depressive thoughts.

very very unpleasant, SLS has THAT right.

sometimes I have big mood swings within a single day. That's not too much fun either.

I hope you and pdoc can get you on some meds to stabilize these things. For me, that means 2 antidepressants, a mood stabilizer and I recently had to add back abilify for racing thoughts, high energy, reckless behavior and little sleep. hypomania to be sure.

well, best of luck,

How well does Abilify treat these symptoms?

I take 20mg of Abilify, mostly as an antidepressant augmentor. I sometimes get severely manic if a drug treatment hits me the wrong way. I was hoping that Abilify would ward this off. I sometimes trigger a manic episode when I discontinue Nardil too abruptly. I had no manic symptoms at all a few months ago when I came off Nardil in order to switch to Parnate.

First of all, I hope that you continue to have successful treatment on Parnate :)

As far as I know, the abilify does it for me. I took a dose last night, and I felt okay today. A little shaky, and somewhat having to bite my tongue. a little restless (not akasthesia, however), but not overly drowsy or whatnot.

I have been on this cocktail since April
300mg wellbutrin
100mg zoloft
300mg lamictal
(ambien, sonata, xanax for the dentists)
And 5 or 10mg of abilify also. I discontinued abilify in August. It was fine for the most part, but gradually the feelings of craziness came back. Therapist assures me that I am not "acting" crazy, but in the last 2 weeks I have been socially reckless and have been not sleeping very well (I don't WANT to sleep-- which is Key, here)

So, hypomania.

Remind me in 2 weeks to post an update. pdoc said it would take about 10 days to reach steady state and have effects.
