Abilify and Akathisia

Posted by john51 on November 19, 2008, at 11:30:37

Has anyone taken Abilify in conjunction with an AD and experienced Akathisia (extreme restlessnes and uncontrollable muscle movement)????

If so how long did this last after discontinuing the Abilify?

Thanks,
John51

When at the psych hospital the nurse practitioner there changed my meds to Abilify and Cymbalta, both of which were new to me. The Abilify gave me a terrible restless feeling, but I didn't have the extra physical movement. I later asked my psychiatrist if the terrible restless feeling could still be akathisia when not also having extra physical movement, and he said yes. I guess some may disagree with that definition. Anyways, if I recall correctly, my terrible restless feeling went right away when I stopped the med.
I don't know if this says anything else relevant, but I didn't have any trouble tapering off of SSRIs nor Effexor or Cymbalta, when I've read here about some people's really different stories.

I am on Abilify and Lexapro, never experienced any side effects whatsoever from Abilify. Maybe an increase in energy which I love since the Lexapro makes me a bit lethargic. I've had nothing but positive experiences with Abilify, luckily.

I'm not sure if I was on it concerto with an SSRI, I think I probably was -- everything on the D2 occupation scale of AP agents caused akathisia except for Zyprexa and Seroquel.

Zyprexa caused potentially permanent dystonia in the legs and arms, though I do still try to hike and my weight probably has something to do with it too. Rare. Very rare.

Anyway that's beside the point, Abilify disappointed me because it had me writhing on the floor literally just like Geodon, and I needed, well it was still available at the time -- why do they remove a perfectly good antiparkinsonian, Akineton (biperiden) -- now it would be Artane (Cogentin really gives me halo vision). Anyhow.

But they say, your miles may vary. For some, it may be the drug of choice. I just had hopes for the D2 pushme-pullyou partial agonism-antagonism. It didn't quite turn out that way.
