it all depends on what you need. a tend to get hysterical fast, and right now, the numbness prozac is giving me is helping me to stay more present for my life and not run from it because i feel so overwhelmed by it

I just don't see the point in life if I can't feel anything. Theres no reason for doing anything.

Yeah, I hear ya Link. I got numb like that on prozac too. Actually at the time it was better than the depression I had prior to it. After a while though the numbness really wore me out. Added zyprexa, that helped some. Later added adrafinil and that helped even more. Still though, things were never quite right.

Some people are lucky and actually experience normalness and remission on ssris, but for a lot of us it is the numbness thing, or even a worsening of depression.

Of all the ADs I've tried, Milnacipran was still the best. Kind of rough side effects if someone is skinny or male, but hey, none of that ssri numbness stuff.

So I wonder, will you try augmenting prozac or getting off it?

I felt worse on Prozac, too, Linkadge. Felt like I was walking through life in a fog. You know it's not helping you, so maybe you ought to talk to your doc about moving on to something else.

Take care.

Its taking informed consent -- knowing the major side effects and benefits and deciding on it.

There generally are no "cures" for biological illnesses, there are palliatives, medication that allow those of us afflicted with whatever may affect us to function better.

Biological imbalances wax and wane, that's why they're imbalances. Nothing is perfect in nature.

And the same can be said for any medical treatment one might need at a hospital -- one has to outweigh, will it benefit my life so I can enjoy being around my family and friends even if the side effects are a risk, or do I just put up with an illness knowing that I will feel better regardless of its course. That may be a bit of a downer, but it is how we make choices in life.

Its no more easy for me to have to than I'm sure many others here probably think the same thing.

Prozac is a powerful SSRI and those are notorious for causing emotional numbness in some people. Have you been on it for a short enough time that there's hope of it lessening as you adjust? My numbness on Zoloft did go away after a couple of weeks, but I never did get the full emotional range back.

But of course now that I have the full emotional range back I want it gone ASAP.

I hope you feel better.

Would it make sense to take less of it then?

Does it (at any dose) do anything worthwhile for you?

Did you try 10mg first for the first week before moving to 20mg? 20mg right off the bat is pretty strong and may cause numbness and increased anxiety.

I started on 5mg and wanted to ram an icepick through my skull. I have since stopped it and the egitation is slowly getting bettr.

Perhaps I stopped it too soon, but I don't care, I don't mess with feelings like that.

prozac has done wonders for some

it was the first AD i tried as an adult
i took it for a few weeks when i was on an intense reading and writing schedule and did well as far as being a "productive" being

but the physical sensations were frightening
i was taking three long baths a day in an attempt to keep contact b/w mind and body

there are other meds that won't be so rough on you

hang in there

How do you react on antipsychotics with some 5-HT2c antagonistic properties ?

Modern scientific literature consider Prozac to be more of a 5-HT2c antagonist than an SSRI. That is, the antidepressant effect of Prozac is attributed more to those antagonistic properties than from the SRIs properties.

Your 5-HT2c upregulation reponse to your 5-HT2c antagonism may be grossly exegerated.. the aftermath being MORE 5-HT2c stimulation (agonism from serotonin) and even more because of increased synatic 5-HT concentration because of the SRI. This is pretty interesting...

Counterintuitively, that hypothesis would suggest that you are a good candidate for 5-HT2c antagonism, but a stronger one that could cover your over the top upregulation... if that's possible.

Also, Prozac or not, you may be so sensitive to 5-HT2c endogenous agonism that everything increasing 5-HT receptor activity (SRIs etc) would end up cause more trouble than good because of too much 5-HT2c agonism.

Ever tried Desyrel (Trazodone) ? If so, how did you feel a couple hours before your next dose ? mCPP, one of Trazodone metabolite, is a 5-HT2c Agonist and I'll be interested in how you felt on it. Even more interesting is if you could get some right now and see how you react to it while being on Prozac... you could learn something very worthy about your personal neurology. Something that you could actually use to tweak your cocktail. Agomelatine is already there.. and if what you need is very strong 5-HT2c antagonism WITHOUT increased serotoninergic activity AND decreased dopaminergic activity (also very important) .. than is could be the missing thing in your cocktail.
