Has anyone taken prochlorperazine?

Posted by Quintal on September 20, 2008, at 7:14:22

I'm looking for experiences. There are times when my mind just won't switch off at night and benzos don't work. I've found Zyprexa is a perfect dimmer switch, and helps me cut down on thoughts generally. Unfortunately it has a very long half life and leaves me feeling sedated and clumsy all the next day. It also makes me forgetful. If only it came in a six hour release version!

Seroquel might fit the bill having all those mood brightening properties built in, so I've left word to ask my pdoc to consider it when he gets back from his break. From what I remember it was sedating like no other substance I've taken. It tended to cause oversleeping. I'm prepared to be realistic and accept that anything powerful enough to knock me out when in one of those states will cause some hangover the next morning, but I'm looking to minimize that as much as possible. This is what attracts me to procholrperazine. The half life is about right so I think it's worth a try. It's not something I would want to take on a daily basis though. I'm just looking for something to fill that gap. Can anyone who has taken both compare them?

I have an old packet of Buccastem prescribed for my mother ten years ago. I'm not quite sure whether it's safe or not, but I want to give it a test run before asking my pdoc for it. Any thoughts? The tablets are in blister strips and have been kept in a cool, dry place. I haven't got one out and smelled it yet, but otherwise they look in good condition.

yes I have, I was given it years ago for migraines, and more recently as an antiemetic for opiate base drugs due to nausea. I didn't find it fantastic for sleep though.
It does make you drowsy but I never gained a great nights sleep from it.

Older style antihistamines like Promethazine hydrochloride, worked much better for me re sleep. So does Doxylamine Succinate and Dexchlorpheniramine maleate. I think some of those drugs have minor AP properties but you'll have to check. They are all over the counter here, but strong and effective for sleep. Sorry about using the medical names but the drugs might have different brand names in your country. Good luck. C

Buccastem M tablets contain the active ingredient prochlorperazine. Is this what you have? How many mg in each tablet?

Prochlorperazine has two different uses. In higher doses, it is for psychiatric conditions. In lower doses, it provides relief from nausea and vomiting.

Thanks cactus, I would try promethazine again because worked quite well in the past. I think it is related to APs. I tried to get some a few weeks ago, but the pharmacist gave me something else (meclizine) instead.

I took a Buccastem last night and it wasn't very nice. I felt what might have been the beginnings of akathisia - I had to keep moving my legs all night. I took some diphenhydramine and it helped. I don't think I'll be taking it again!

I have Buccastem - they contain 3mg of prochlorperazine. The doses used to treat mania start at 12.5mg, but I wouldn't want to take that much after how I felt last night!

You might possibly get a dystonic reaction from too much Stemetil.

I got one from too much Torechan, a drug in the same class.

It was really unpleasant. No amount of Valium would stop it, though it helped.

That's good timing. Something strange happened last night and I think it might have been realted to the Stemetil/Buccastem. I decided it would be a good idea to take 200mg amisulpride to help me sleep (I don't want to take any more Zyprexa) and it caused something like that, also with high fever and agitation. I managed to loosen myself up with some zopiclone and carisoprodol, and a bit of Mirapex brought the temperature down. Now I'm a bit wary of the Seroquel I've been asking for (haven't got it yet, will find out tomorrow). It was, as you say - very unpleasent. I hope what they say about low dose Seroquel have very little dopamine antagonism is true.

I found the 10mg tabs of phernegen/promethazine good for sleep but the 25mg ones were way too much. For me it was quite similar to a low dose of seroquel 25-50mg. I was very foggy the next day. Funny you mention the legs, everytime I took prochlorperazine, it would set my RLS into over drive, which of course at the time I had no idea what that was. phernegen/promethazine can be used as an AP but generally isn't but for some reason it doesn't mess with my RLS.

I just went to get some at the chemist and they say it's been taken off the market for OTC sales. So that'll be why no one had any in stock a few weeks ago. The only way you can get it now (in UK) is on prescription.

That is rather untimely, what a pain. I never developed a tolerance to it either. I also used it for hayfever, which is shocking where I live at this time of year but it's great for most allergies.

Is your new cat making you get itchy eyes and sneeze ;-) If you catch my drift. The new non drowsy anti histamines don't work for me at all.

Hi Quintal

I think the Chemist has been having you on. After all you can still buy Sominex with 20mg promethazine and I bought a packet of Sanofi-Aventis Phenergan not that long ago. I ask the Pharmacist why there as so many questions when they sell it and they told me that people drug their kids with it. Then Calpol brought out a product with paracetamol and promethazine in it, no idea what they were talking about.

I don't think they were making it up James - just a few weeks ago I went to three different pharmacies in town and none of them had any preparations containing promethazine. I thought there was something up after that. I asked for Avomine on the pretext of having travel sickness (they never were happy about dispensing Phenergan as a sleep aid), but they had none of that in stock either. This is the fourth one I've been to and they were the first to just tell me it had been restricted as a prescription only medicine. On the other hand I've just ordered some Avomine from an online outlet and it went through. I don't know how up to date they are though.

>I ask the Pharmacist why there as so many questions when they sell it and they told me that people drug their kids with it

Well that would be a good reason to want to stop OTC sales. They do seem to suspect you're up to mischief if you ask for a any preparation by name rather than asking for help with a particular complaint. There was once 'a problem with the manufacturer' when I asked for some Nytol One a Night. I was withdrawaing from clonazepam and was quite wild eyed and desperate for sleep - so probably even more suspect in the eyes of the pharmacist. I suppose a similar thing could be happening here, but I think there might be something to it.

Hi Qunital

I am glad you got the Avomine, I alway though this had a different active ingredient for some reason.

There possibly could have been a manufactuering problem. I would call up a branch of Boots ask to get put through to the dispensary and say you have a script for it, "do you have it in stock"? so you can see if they really have they are just not will as we both know to give it out as a sleep aid.

I was being prescribed it a way above the maximum dose by my Pdoc as a sleep aid along with imported midazolam, and the Pharmacist always used to ask questions and generally be unhappy about dispensing it outside of its license.

just about every aussie kid I know was dosed with phenergan at some stage in their childhood for multiple reasons such as motion sickness, sleep, hives and allergies. I don't think there are many houses in OZ that don't have a bottle of it on hand for their kidz. It has a wide range of uses. Especially bee stings because it's so fast acting in liquid form.

You do get a Q&A session from the chemist when you buy it these days though.
