Does anyone not suffer from insomnia with nardil?

Posted by whitmore on September 21, 2008, at 17:51:18

I'm thinking of asking my doctor to start me on a course of Nardil for my severe depression and have been looking at some of the past posts from users. It seems that everyone has to take additional medications, and some quite heavy duty ones, for sleep. Does anyone out there take Nardil and not have sleep problems? Those that have the sleep problems, can you get by with Ambien, melatonin or Benadryl(if that's allowed)? Thanks in advance.

whitmore,

I took doxylamine succinate (generic Unisom) with Nardil when I took it two years ago. It generally helped with the insomnia. Doxylamine succinate is an antihistamine, which I understand is sometimes listed as being contraindicated with Nardil. My pdoc, however, advised me that it was ok to take the two medications together.

I should probably say that even though I had some insomnia on Nardil, it wasn't that bad. I also found the insomnia to be worse on Pfizer's U.S. Nardil than on the Australian Nardil. So, even though the mild hypnotic doxylamine succinate helped me sleep when I was taking Nardil, more severe cases of insomnia might require a more "heavy-duty" sleep medication.

Hi whitmore,
I believe everyone that takes a high dosage of Nardil, I took 90mg and up to 120mg at times, will have significant insomnia. Just my opinion. I used very small(25mg) doses of Seroquel and it has never let me down. I have taken Benadryl; it works for me for a short time, until the tolerance is built up. I am very sensatitive to the meds that affect histamine. I am surprised that I have not built up tolerance to the sleepiness effect of Seroquel. I have also taken trazodone as a sleep aid with some success. As I mentioned to streetsk8er794 below, search for Jedi in Dr. Bob's Google search engine. Most of my comments are on the MAOIs, specifically Nardil.
Be Well,
Jedi

I am on 75mg of Nardil and do have insomnia from it. The doctor has prescribed Ambien but it doesn't do much for me. I've read that it really helps some people, so you may want to try it.

Hi Azlizzy, I'm on 75mg of Nardil as well. I did find have problems with insomnia at first, but it's been about 6 weeks or so and my insomnia is completely gone.

Oops sorry! Meant for whitmore! (nm)

I used to get early awakening with Nardil (60mg). Ambien helped a lot with that. For whatever reason, I don't get that as much anymore, though I have to make sure I practice good sleep habits, too. Otherwise, my lifelong sleep issues come back, and I start feeling worse from lack of sleep.
