Increasing the dose of Effexor XR above 150mg will provide norepinephrine reuptake inhibition along with serotonin reuptake inhibition. Straterra (atomoxetine) is a pure norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor. Reboxetine has a similar mechanism of action, but is not available in the US.

Does this mean that if I up the effexor i will have sufficient norepinephrine reuptake inhibition w/o the Straterra?

ANd if I only take the Straterra my serotonin levels will be left to their own devices?

what bout something that will effect both my norepinephrine and dopamine levels

Increasing the Effexor will provide norepinephrine (in addition to serotonin) reuptake inhibition. Whether or not it's sufficient depends on your brain chemistry; only a trial of will tell. Perhaps something to discuss with your doctor.

Straterra alone does not affect serotonin. But the Effexor 150mg you're taking does.

Wellbutrin (buproprion) would be good for this as it is a norepinephrine and dopamine reuptake inhibitor. High-dose Effexor combined with Wellbutrin is one of the heroic combos for treatment-resistant unipolar depression described by Dr. Stephen Stahl in his book Essential Psychopharmacology.
Wellbutrin is available in several generic formulations and is quite reasonable in price.

srsly though venlafaxine is a WEAK inhibitor of norepinepherine. It isn't a good substitute for a real nri.

IF you can't easily afford atomoxetine, bupropion is a decent drug. For a cheap (and very effective) nri, look into desipramine or Nortriptaline.

Are you paying much for the venlafaxine? I remember a year ago when i was on it it was pretty expensive although i didn't have insurance. You could replace it with a sri like sertraline, in combination with an nri or stimulant and save $$ and it woudl also be more effective probably. Same thing with just taking amitriptyline.

You can get generic Strattera (atomoxetine) from some Canadian pharmacies-- it's not "crazy" cheap (in fact, you have to buy them 100-at-a-time). It's about 1/3rd the price, though. I've ordered from one with good results (I did research first, and a prescription is required-- a good sign). It was canadadrugs.com (I just found a copy of the form I faxed in).

I didn't realize that Effexor XR was a SNRI-- it explains why it worked for me so well.. though only for about a month. And, of course, I had a HORRIBLE time getting off of it.
