I still question the "poisoning" by Lamictal -- I mean, I can imagine a medication can induce psychosis but once you stop it it should reduce in time.

Since you have some disorder, schizophrenia or otherwise that you say your doctors describe as "psychosis" (that's not a complete DSM term, has to be qualified by something else as far as I know or linked to some cause or 'NOS' -- I could be wrong), you would have a "psychosis" anyhow.

More -- lots more, etc, isn't always "better" -- sometimes it takes longer to set in --- more can mean more unwanted effects, the two sulpirides are not immune from tardive and EPS conditions.

I certainly don't like the prospect of taking "lots more" of an antipsychotic any more given my problems with them that I have now -- that's not to say everybody will develop the rare conditions I did.

But some people need more -- I think you have to weigh what could happen and I hope your doctors and you actually communicate and you express what you really want.

-- just a thought, best wishes

Jay

Jeroen, this may sound obvious, but what are you trying to treat? Sometimes if one is more specific about the symptoms one is trying to address, it helps clarify the whole picture.

For example, when I say, "I want to treat my depression," I mean something different from what, say, SLS might mean. But if I say, "I want to treat the anhedonia part of my depression," it's probably more similar to what SLS might mean by the same thing. Does that make sense?

I know you're trying to treat something you're describing as "psychosis" -- but psychosis is a very general term. It can include hallucinations, delusional beliefs, disorganized thinking, etc. If your diagnosis is schizophrenia -- I don't remember if you've really said? I think you said something about it recently, but my memory isn't so great right now. A number of different disorders listed in the DSM and the ICD include psychosis as a symptom, and treatments for those disorders may be very different.

Sometimes the picture is very unclear. For example, the impairment in your life could lead to situational distress that mimics Major Depressive Disorder, but might not actually be MDD. That can make it harder to figure out. But the more specific you can be with the symptoms you're trying to treat, the more likely you are to see something you might have missed -- including improvements from medications that you hadn't noticed before.

Also, I know you attribute a lot of your symptoms to Lamictal, but a bad response to Lamictal does not mean that you're not bipolar. It only means that you had a bad reaction to Lamictal. (And I agree with Yxibow -- if the Lamictal really did *cause* a psychotic reaction, I'd expect the psychosis to resolve once you were off the drug. It may be that taking the Lamictal correlated in time to the psychosis, but was otherwise unrelated. Especially since I seem to remember you only took it for a few days.)

I hope you're aware by now that I care what happens to you, and I really wish you the very best. My question about specifics is meant to be helpful -- if you think it's not helpful to you, please ignore it and forgive me. And please keep in mind my good wishes and intentions.

Best luck, Jeroen. I hope things turn around for you very soon.

I think your idea of how one drug cured you for a few days is unhealthy.

Jeroen, I just noticed that you posted this a few days ago:

http://www.dr-bob.org/babble/20080822/msgs/847876.html

I wonder if maybe, when you feel bad, you might forget that you felt better a little while ago? That's happened to me, and I used a mood chart to track what was really going on for me. I started to see the patterns in my moods, and could see when I had a trend towards feeling better. Before the mood chart, I would think I was just as miserable as I had been before starting a medication -- the mood chart helped me see when I had a consistent trend towards improvement.

I know that you and I have different diagnoses, different symptoms, etc, but I think that might help you, too. Do you think it's worth talking to your doctor about using a mood chart?

Also, do you talk much with your doctor? Does your doctor tell you why he/she's prescribing one medication rather than another, or discuss your reactions to these medications? (And I do hope you're trying to talk to your doctor -- it does make a difference for me, having a doctor I trust, who talks to me)

I'm very sorry I can't fix this for you, Jeroen. I do hope that some of my suggestions have been helpful to you, or at least that knowing you've got support here is comforting to you.

When you said the seroquel cured you for 2 months and pooped out. Did you try to increase the dose on that one?
