Afraid to get on any medication

Posted by WaterSapphire on August 29, 2008, at 3:21:23

This is going to perhaps sound dumb and I thought I should put it here. It is not just psych meds I am totally terrified/reluctant about now...but all medication in general I seem to be scared of.
I am willing to take medication if I absolutely must for my health especially for quality of life and comfort, or if it actually is working for whatever illness it is supposed to treat. Because of fear that my kidneys are not quite right (despite normal kidney function labs), yet a few other things point to issues that doctors I have seen won't address, I am now also very scared of going on anything at all. Pain meds that were fine for years, got to be too strong and overpowered my system last fall to where I had to come off of them on my own. If I am going to get a medication, it really needs to be something that if I bother spending my money on...that it needs to work and not be something I have to stop taking. I am too poor for that. So, I have this fear. I am doing better with supplements, but I really am hoping to get what I need for both mental and physical health problems. Will long term medications for ocd hurt my brain? I felt like my mind is not the same as it used to be.
I am feeling pretty ok right now, but the OCD definitely needs some help lol...

I have been on cymbalta but it made me ummm
very self destructive. But, I have never tried Valerian. I wish the cymbalta would have helped me cuz I hear it helps so many people with the depression and pain. My sis had the same problem with it. I don't know why. I think my neurotransmitters are all screwed up...
I am going to have to have a look into the valerian and hopefully in the next month can talk to the doctor about all this. Hope all is well for you...TGIF

Cymbalta first time tolerated 60mg but did nothing else til went off it and then I had back pain . On it again a few years later couldn't tolerate 30mg. Seriously know what you mean about meds as it seems a lot of meds are being pulled due to harming people including meds for cholesterol and pain. Don't trust herbs and I used to be a health nut before anxiety and take lots of vitamins now its only C, MVI, calicium*mg and magnesium and vita D The D was a doc's order for bones. I just don't like meds anymore as they seem to make me worse in the long run. I look here for convincing data to take them. Haven't found it yet. I took valerian years ago with xanax and have no ideas which was doing which. Let us know how it goes. Phillipa

If you are doing fairly ok with your supplements, maybe not mess it up with meds? I can see your reluctance with meds. I am that way. And in your shoes I would be even more so.

I don't know what your supplements are. Is 5htp one of them? Basically high levels of serotonin calm down OCD. Also high levels of GABA. So anything to boost serotonin and/or gaba levels might be helpful? 5htp for serotonin, valerian for gaba. Niacinimide (not niacin) in large doses could also be part of the mix.

If you absolutely felt you had to do a med for OCD, perhaps go back to the old original standard for that...Luvox. Forget all the new me-too's. Just a thought.

And if supplements are working fairly ok, you might try attacking the OCD from a psychological stance rather than a biological stance, and seek some specialized counseling/therapy aimed specifically at OCD.

What supplements are you taking? I want some of them. :=)

HI, so you have the script vitamin D too.
I have always been very very wary of supplements even to the point of taking regular vitamins. But, after being so hopeless with nothing else helping the medical problems which result in neurological symptoms that go so severe I cannot even bear to go back to that moment (magnesium and potassium saved my life). And, then I got the benefit of something else...some relief from my mental health problems too. So much so, I went off my klonopin, zoloft, and neurontin. (The neurontin was for what they deemed to be peripheral neuropathy, pain from sciatica, and was also for my mental health too). Guess what, the magnesium worked better than the neurontin for the (supposed neuropathy), and the pain too.
I still get pain, but not as bad when I take magnesium every single day. I hate being sick, but love having something that helps ease my suffering some that is for sure. I am not saying I never need to get another med though. My hubby is afraid for me to go back on medication because he says I am better on the magnesium. I sleep better, feel better, can move around much better including taking care of basic needs that most people would take for granted. And now I know, I cannot have too much calcium. It undoes the emotional benefits. I am babbling on babble again.
I am afraid that nothing else will ever work this well for the mental health, even though I want the OCD to go bye bye. I am scared of meds in general because I still have this crazy idea in my head that even though my labs are ok for now, that I am in the beginning stages of losing kidney function. Only time will tell with this.
So as you have done, I will definitely keep taking a few things like this. I may look into the valerian and see if it adds any other benefit.
Thanks for replying and have an awesome Sunday

HI there,
I think you have a good take on this here. I think that when I have the resources to get into a specilialized therapy (with someone who really knows how to help patients with anxiety and OCD), that trying some different types of therapy might really benefit me.
As you had responded on the alternative board to my magnesium post...it is the magnesium that has been my saving grace. This, and carefully making sure I have potassium when needed along with staying hydrated which has been a bit difficult for me. Even salt too much makes me sick, and too little seems to be very dangerous. So, everything is moderation...but my poor system is not regulating things as it should it seems so I am trying to play the guessing game here until they figure out what is wrong.
I always had so much trouble even trying to do basic thought processes with some simple cbt type things. I get so distracted. I wonder if that does not work, what else out there I could try.

Well, enough babblin on this post for me. Have an awesome Sunday, and thank you for replying to my post.

I think I'm beginning to understand your medical problems please don't be angry as this is an interpretation and please correct me if wrong are a result of OCD? Vita D I have a study here from my pdoc's journal that states vita D is good for bones and for taking less pain meds. See I have osteoporsis and can't take boniva or the other meds for that disease. Was given a very simple blood test to check for D levels and was 40 below 20 not good. Love Phillipa

NO offense taken. I am not sure at all what is what. I have several diagnosed physical medical problems that have made my life a train wreck for starters. But, I know even before diagnosis as a young adult, I have always suffered from horrid anxiety and OCD. (since the age of 5). I do not know if it is possible or not, but could so many years of this be finally taking its toll maybe on something say my adrenals. I need potassium and magnesium every day now or I cannot function. I cannot tell where one thing beings or the other ends. There are some rare medical illnesses that can cause severe anxiety and such, but the severity of tremor, twitching, cramping, etc. did not start until a little over what three years ago I guess. We had mold in our last place, and that seemed to really make things worse, so when we moved some things got better. But, I am still left with the nagging feeling my anxiety is really taking its toll on my body. It is either this Philippa, or my primary physician is having me get checked for adrenal issues, Cushings's, or tumors. When the tremor first started (I thought maybe it was a result of my psych meds), but it is pretty much confined to my one hand. My ex psych. doc didn't think it was tardive dyskenisia (sp?). Emg tests showed a change of things in this same wrist and hand. I even was diagnosed with strabismus cuz I have had double vision now for over two years. Always wore glasses, never had this before. I have double vision all the time now. Sorry this is so long...it is just none of it makes sense. I am seeing an endocrinologist ( a new one) for the first time this week coming up so long as nothing keeps me from my appt. I am hoping maybe he can set this straight. It is certainly important to see if Anxiety and OCD could cause some of the lab results to go awry or to determine if I have something else going on. Whatever it is, I just want to know. I want some of my life back. Thank you for asking Philippa. When I find out, I will let everyone know...cuz I really want some relief.

Have a good Labor day
