Aricept [Donepezil] Day 1

Posted by Mishal on July 3, 2008, at 1:41:10

Pharmacist had a chuckle soon after I asked for Dopezil 5mg (Indian brand of Donepezil made by Ranbaxy)

"For whom sir?"

"For myself"

The guy looks again in disbelief. "I never sold this to...."

Anyway, escaping the scene I got back to my apartment. Twenty white tablets. I took my dinner early to swallow one of them. Half of that Ativan 2mg too. It is a precaution. If I ever get manic or hypomanic..? Ativan can answer.

I went to bed earlier but things started to improve.. I mean really improve. For the first time in many months, I felt like going out for a movie or doing something at retiring hours. There was a pile of magazines left untouched. I started on them.
Clock ticks
..00 13 14 15...

Gee.. I am not thinking of sleeping at all. Everything seems different to me. Razor-sharp focus.. Want to do something late at night when the whole New Delhi is sleeping..!
I went to bed by 3am. No weird dreams as someone mentioned on this board. There were dreams for sure, but I don't remember them anymore. Great..

It was 10:00am

It didn't surprise me as I woke up and began functional instantly. The brightest morning in a long time. I did sleep seven hours. Perhaps it(sleep) could be ativan? I don't think so. Ativan is not a new med for me. I have taken it and stayed disturbed in bed many times.

Is it too early to get buzzed? Okay.. I would keep you all updated. If "first impression is the best impression" I would say this one is way better than Trivastal or Provigil. And see it is cheap here: Less than 5 US dollars for twenty pills..! Oh.. this is India where meds are dirt cheap.

Now see my cocktail:

Prozac 60mg in the morning.
Modalert 200mg in the morning (Modalert = Provigil)
Solian (Amisulpride) 50mg at night. (It is sold as "Sulpitac" here)
Donepezil 5mg at night.
Ativan Occasionally. (I can skip days and restart again. Dosage is 2mg)

I know meds; especially Aricept is cost prohibitive in US and Europe. Do one thing: Get a prescription from your doc and order it online. The stuff you get will be from SUN pharma, the second largest generic manufacturer in India with a brand name "Donecept" (Ranbaxy doesn't provide their products online)But don't worry at all. All those meds I take are Indian generics and I haven't felt them any different to the real ones.

Please wait for my update, tomorrow at the same time.

Cheers.

It's a cholinesterase inhibitor, usually used for Alzheimer's. You can get some cholinesterase inhibitors as dietary supplements - at least galanthamine and huperzine A. I've been using the latter (huperzine A) and I've found that it increases dreaming as well as improves memory a little.

Sounds like your trial is off to a good start. Good luck. I found Aricept to be very effective for depression, motivation, and focus. It did make my face flush and it gave me scorching nightmares. I was willing to put up with those. We stopped it when it raised my liver enzymes.

very interesting. do you remember the dose, and when you first noticed benefit, and how long it took to reach the maximum benefit you attained from it?

i'm sorry you had to go off of it when it was so helpful. i tried it, but i never know which drugs really helped me, i am always trying to decipher everything... it is on my list of things to consider retrying, maybe in combination with an NRI or psychostimulant...

I don't remember the dose - I'd have to go through my old notes. But I take very low doses of almost everything. It took a few weeks - maybe 3 or 4 - to kick in.

I know the feeling. It helps to try to only change one thing at a time. I think dealing with treatment resistant mood disorders redefines the word "patience".

Good luck if you retry it.

Your pharmacists have wonderful manners.

But what happened to the Trivastal?

Hi

I too took Aricept back in 2003. My pdoc gave me a private prescription, as the NHS would not prescribe it to non alzheimer patients, for which I had to pay for at the chemist.

Thinking back now, I'm not sure why I ever stopped taking it? It wasn't a miricle cure - but, it did help massively on a few levels.

I think I got up to 10mg, at night. I was holidaying in Florida at the time. I can recall directing my dad around the roads, map reading, something my brain couldn't compute well before.

My vocabulary and memory was far better and speech more fluent. The one thing that did stick out was that I actually managed to read a newspaper, front to back on the plane home, something I hadn't been able to do with books or papers for years (my memory was so short lived from page to page and after a while the DP/DR made the words come out the page at me, I gave up trying).

This thread has prompted me to maybe try it again sometime? I could do with reading a good book! lol.

Gary.
