Nardil withdrawal -) back to Parnate

Posted by maoi_wowee on July 2, 2008, at 22:02:22

Hi,

I used to be on Parnate, but switched to Nardil and am now withdrawing from Nardil and thinking of going back on Parnate. Nardil was the most wonderful thing in the world when it was making me so social, but it eventually started to wear out and the weight gain of 50lbs has become intolerable.

I am finding Nardil withdrawal hell (or maybe it's not the withdrawal, could just be depression slamming me).

I'm thinking of going back on Parnate but not sure how long I have to wash out. Anyone know how soon I can go on Parnate after stopping Nardil??? I'm desperate.

Also, I've always wondered why can't Nardil and Parnate be taken at the same time? What would happen?

thx

My pdoc has always made me do the 14 day washout between MAOI's. If it's any consolation, I had a rough time coming off Nardil. Had brain zaps continuously as soon as I reduced my dosage until about a week before I switched to Parnate. I agree, Nardil is really great for being social. I had one weird side effect that caused me to go off it, and the weight gain was awful. Hope Parnate works well for you again.

Justy how are you doing on the Parnate? Haven't talked in a while. Love Phillipa

In theory, you only need to wait until your Nardil concentrations have declined to negligible levels, or even sooner, as long as you start with low doses of Parnate. Officially, however, I think the instructions are to wait 14 days.

In theory they could be taken at the same time, but I'm not aware of anyone actually doing it. Since both are MAOIs, the risk of using high doses of both simultaneously is a MAOI overdose, which may include symptoms of serotonin syndrome and/or hypertensive crisis.

I wouldn't do it, period. You'd be playing with fire. According to the article on www.mentalhealth.com,

"Phenelzine should not be administered together with or in rapid succession to [Parnate], because Hypertensive Crises and convulsive seizures, fever, marked sweating, excitation, delirium, tremor, coma and circulatory collapse may occur."

I believe, or have no reason to disbelieve, your statement that it is possible to combine them safely "in theory". I just wouldn't want to test it out on my beautiful body ;)

I have to wonder if the prohibition against combining MAOIs is as mistaken a notion as all of the other overcautious MAOI bunk like the original diet restrictions.

I have never ever actually heard of anyone combining, so I wonder if we're going on some overly cautious outdated advice.

There is also the question of whether combining two or more MAOIs is better than using a higher dose of a single MAOI.
