Marplan? Emsam? vs. Parnate + Nardil

Posted by maoi_wowee on June 27, 2008, at 22:54:07

I have had more success on Parnate and Nardil than on any other drugs, but both wore out after a time. I am wondering if I should look to Marplan or Emsam next since I did so well on Parnate and Nardil.

Can anyone please advise on how the effects of Marplan and Emsam compare to those of Parnate and/or Nardil?

Thank you!!!!

I'm like you, Nardil and Parnate worked better then anything for me, but both pooped out after about 3 mos. In my personal experience neither EMSAM nor Marplan came close to Nardil or Parnate. I found remeron to be the next best thing. Best wishes.

I had great success with Nardil 10 years ago - It didn't poop out, I just quit after 6 or 8 months. Emsam did not work for me - I have a free unopened, in date box of 6mg patches. I have not tried Parnate - it sounds too agitating for me. Curious about Marplan but have not tried. TH

Emsam is the odd one out of the bunch, so if Parnate and Nardil worked for you, Marplan would be the closest thing. It's particularly close in nature to Nardil, and they're both probably slightly more effective, and much cheaper, than EMSAM. However, Marplan might cause liver damage in the long term, so you would probably want to get blood tests every month or two to check on your liver. The MAOi diet/blood-pressure crisis phenomenon is also much more likely to happen with Marplan than with EMSAM (though Parnate is by far the worst on that score, and you've already taken that).

EMSAM, like Parnate, is sometimes thought to be more of an 'upper' than Marplan and Nardil. It's also safer (for blood-pressure and liver), more expensive, and involves wearing a patch on your skin. And possibly less powerful. But everything works a little differently for each person -nothing can be predicted with certainty. Ya just gotta try them out to see.

Best of luck!

I never took Emsam, only Eldepryl (pill form of selegiline, was FDA-approved for Parkinson's before Emsam was around), so I'm not sure how much alike they are. Eldepryl was, for me anyway, the most stimulating of the four, and it made me rather anxious. I had some BP problems with Parnate but I solved that by switching to taking it in divided doses of no more than 20mg at a time. Nardil and Marplan are both hydrazine-type MAOIs and I found that they both caused a lot of weight gain. Also Nardil pooped out after a few months and my depression got a lot worse. Selegiline, OTOH, gave me problems with anxiety.

Hope this helps...
