Has anyone taken Vistaril?

Posted by Sef on January 14, 2001, at 19:41:58

I am currently on 30mg Prozac and 300mg Neurontin. My pdoc just added Hydroxyz Pam (Vistaril) for anxiety. If you have taken Vistaril, I would like to hear about your experience and why it was prescribed to you. Thanks!!!!!!!

Sef,
I have taken Vistaril for several years on an as-needed basis. This drug is good for anti-anxiety, anti-nausea, anti-histamine, and I can take 50 mg. at night as a sleep aid if all else fails. For anxiety I take 25 mg. It is also used as a pre-op relaxant at 50 mgs.

It usually has a very subtle effect on me, I just come to realize I'm not gripping white-knuckled with anxiety.

I haven't taken it on a regular basis (daily). I've never noticed any unpleasant side effects.

Good luck,
Shar

Thanks Shar....I was scared to try it because I was worried about drowsiness...I have trouble with feeling fatigued alot now as it is. I will give it a try!

Sef,
If you do have a problem with fatigue, please take Vistaril the first few times when you do not plan to drive or do any bulldozer work.

It's possible that it could make you drowsy, so test a little first. I take it for anxiety, which usually means I'm anything but drowsy or fatigued....

Good luck-
Dr. Koop (really, it's just Shar)

I haven't taken Vistaril (hydroxyzine pamoate), but I do take the similar Atarax (hydoxyzine HCl) occasionally. However, I don't take it for anxiety; I take it for hives when neither Zyrtec nor Benadryl seem to help (although a bad enough case of hives that will not go away causes its own kind of anxiety!). It works better for hives than anything short of prednisone.

I haven't really noticed any antianxiety effects, but then I don't really have a problem with anxiety. It can occasionally make me a little sleepy, though it isn't any more sedating than Benadryl.

TO IS THE ONLY THING THAT SEEMS TO HELP ME FOR ANXIETY. I REALLY DON'T SEE WHY I AM ON THE CELEXA, I AM NOT DEPRESSE, I HAVE ANIETY, AN I'M ALWAYS VERY ANXIOUS, AND GET AGERVATED VERY EASILY, FOR NO REASON. I HATE TO HANG OUT WITH PEOPLE ALL THE TIME.MY HUSBAND AND I HAVE ALOT OF FRIENDS BUT I NEVER FEEL LIKE GOING OUT OR I JUST DON'T WANT TO. I HAVE A 7 MONTH OLD LITTLE BOY AND A 2 1/2 LITTLE GIRL. MY CHILDREN MAKE ME VERY HAPPY BUT SOMETIMES I FEEL LIKE I'M GOING TO EXPLODE. ME AND MY HUSBAND HAVE HAD PROBLEMS WITH THE SEX ISSUE. I AM STARTING THERAPY TOMMARROW, AND I'M CURRENTLY WORKING ON THE SEX THING, WE HAVE A PERFECT MARRIAGE OTHER THAN THAT. EXCEPT I LIKE TO SLEEP AS MUCH AS I CAN WHEN I GET A CHANCE. DOES THIS SOUND NORMAL TO BE ON ALL THESE MEDICINES. ARE THESE SIDE EFFECTS?? CAN ANYONE HELP ME!!! I HAVE ALSO BEEN ON PAXIL, ZOLOF,AND ABOUT 3 OTHER MEDICINES. I HAVE SHORT TERM MEMORY LOSS ALOT. I have taken Vistaril, for nausea, and for anxiety. I noticed a few strange things after I had taken it for a month or so. I began to have trouble distinguishing dreams from reality, it was really frightening at times. I also had a crazy delusion or hallucination, I'm not sure what to call it. It was like a dream, aside from the fact that I was awake and walking around the whole time. My memory bagan to falter, as well. I would forget I had taken the vistaril and just grab a few more. In retrospect, I had taken an entire months supply in less than 2 weeks. I made the decision to stop taking it then!
The drugs you're on definitely contribute to your desire to sleep. If you really feel too sedated, you should discuss the possibility of changing meds with your pdoc. Good luck!
Autumn

Vistaril was no more beneficial than a benedryl for me. I have been taking Xanax for 14 years for anxiety and panic disorder and for the most part, the panic attacks are few and far apart. Some times, I go months without even the smallest panic attack. I will say that the Xanax is so addictive and is hard on the liver. I only think of what life was like before I started taking Xanax and I will deal with whatever it does to my body. Without it, I feel that I would have been put in a hospital forever. The anxiety and panic attacks took my life over completely. In my opinion, any doctor who tells you that vistaril is just as effective as a benzodiazepine is kidding him or herself and perhaps is trying to keep you from becoming addicted to a drug. You have to take your pick sometimes when mental health is an issue, do you want to live better now or just live the way you are now but longer. Figure that one out! Good Luck.

I was at the E.R. recently with another (thought I was having a heart attack and dying ...AGAIN) anxiety attack and the doc there gave me a prescription for Vistaril and said it was usually given in conjunction with Tenormin for patiets with anxiety disorder...I had the prescription for Tenormin from another doc who diagnosed my mitral valve prolapse about 3 weeks ago..One funny note: The doc who gave me the Vistaril seemed suprised that the other doc didn't automatically give me the Vistaril with the Tenormin (???) (Have been taking Xanax 1mg, Effexor XR 75 mg, and Zyprexa for about 9 months)

Also, I forgot to mention earlier, on the topic of drowsiness..none of the meds I mentioned earlier have the slightest effect regarding drowsiness with me, although the Vistaril comes with the dire warning 'DO NOT OPERATE ANY MOTOR VEHICLE WHEN TAKING THIS MEDICATION'...(?)

Vistaril was prescribed to me for sleeping. It made me too groggy. Couldnt use it. It is an antihistamine.

Vistaril (an antihistamine) just made me sleepy. The only way it helped with anxiety was by putting me to sleep.

I was in a psych. hospital getting off my last 2mg. of Valium (from 20mg -> 2mg. on my own), where the covering doctor on weekends would come in and offer Vistaril to anyone on the floor who might be having anxiety problems. He'd say "the good part is it's non-addictive - the bad part is it doesn't really work all that well".

Good luck.

I've been prescribed Vistaril for anxiety, but I need to take like 75-100mg to do something. And also,Atarax is almost the same thing, but it works better.I know docs are definitely going to give you that before a benzo, but the benzos help a lot better.

Girl, you need to get off all those meds! You just had a baby! You are not going to be normal until that baby is at least a year. I also have a 8 yr old and a 6 mth old and I understand what you are going through. Those feelings of anxiousness and anger and whatever else ARE real, BUT your gonna have to be aware that they are going to be exaggerated because of your hormones! I'm telling you I'm on a roller coaster ride every month, and sometimes every day, it sucks. What gets me through it is I know its not going to last forever and a good cry maybe. I hate to go on and on, my point I want to get across is that I can relate, you know I dont know you, but I have been where you are (with my first) that by the time she turned one, there was so much damage done between her father and I, some of his family and even some of mine, that it could'nt be undone. If you get wrapped up in those emotions, it WILL change you. Next time, try taking a breath, stepping back, and really look at why your feeling that way...is it possible the other person had good intentions/didnt realize/whatever....and the most important question-is it WORTH it to hold on to those negative feelings (cuz they will turn into grudges)? I'm not suggesting that all issues are dismissable Im sure theres a few thats not. My heart goes out to you and I wish you the best of luck, if you need someone to talk to that understands post back and I will give you my email.

Wow, this thread has been going on forever..6 years.. now 7.

I was just prescribed Vistaril recently. I told my doctor that clonazepam was simply not enough for my anxiety. So I began taking it for sleep, as I also suffer from chronic insomnia, and yes.. it also made me sleep for several hours..15 or more.

I'd take it at 12am, but wouldn't go to sleep till like 2am. Then next day I'd wake up at 5pm or later. It was awful. But at least I got the sleep I so badly needed after so many sleepless nights.
