What's Your Definition Of Deression Vs Anxiety?

Posted by Phillipa on June 25, 2008, at 13:26:03

I feel people have different definitions of depression. Some work and feel good enough to do that. Some stay home, some can't get out of bed. And Since I've had anxiety for so many years what is normal anxiety and abnormal anxiety. For me seems I need excitement to feel better and stay on the go which isn't fast. Stay up late to do Ebay posting and sleep late still not 8 hours of sleep. But if A great thing happens shouldn't I feel a sense of relief that something bad is over with good results. I don't so what causes that? Thanks Phillipa

--I've experienced both the 'typical' depression (can't eat, can't sleep, down mood etc.) which always seems to be related to exogenous circumstances (breakup w/ boyfriend, family illness...) and the 'atypical' depression (can do nothing BUT sleep, increased appetite, 'leaden paralysis) which always seems to be endogenous (just me - from extended periods of extreme stress and negative thinking/guilt).

--I'm very ADHD with severe GAD and PTSD and I'm the same way (only really productive at night unless i take my Adderall and extreme chronic primary insomnia). It's a well-documented fact that ADDers feel let-down and almost depressed sometimes after an event that would produce satisfaction & feelings of self-worth in a "normal" person. The Amen Clinic website info & books have been very helpful in allowing me to accept that this a normal reaction for me.

Sorry if this was not helpful or a confusing/not well-written post. I'm new at this and am not on the right meds yet so i feel very discombobulated. Best of luck Phillipa!!

Hey Phillipa,

I have both GAD and depression. Here's how I interpret some of my symptoms:

Mood swings - depression
Sleeping in abnormally - depression
Guilt and or feeling of doom - anxiety
sleeplessness - combo depression and perimenopause
Need for extra stimulus - ADHD/anxiety
Staying up late to be on computer - anxiety - if I am distracted then I don't feel the anxiety

That's just a few. Don't know if it helps.

Regards,
Pam (toots)

In my humble opinion, I think there is array of anxiety types just like depression. And there are different mixes of the two, as well as how thightly they are integrated with each other- like iced coffee vs. a fraphachino (blended)
My personal examples:
1- Anxiety of emptiness/loneliness that makes me anxious to get out & do something, but most of the time I have the depression that makes me not want to. (sometimes it's one or the other, and the mixed=sucks) Side note- the 1st week I took Adderall, I felt great & motivated - no depression or anxiety. Did it work on both? (Adderall caused a lot of cycling for me)
And there's my recent experieces that seemed to work the 1st time(not the 2nd): Anxious/emptiness w/ depression/no motivation. Took a xanax, and they were all gone (well mostly gone)Did the xanax work on both, or did one trump the other?
2- My experience has mostly been depression with maybe a lesser anxiety, but when I had full-blown anxiety...pure hell. Still had depression, but anxiety won if there was a contest. Pit in my stomach, nerves were on fire, for no reason.

Obviously you can have one without the other. And obviously you can have both. But it also interests me how there are overlaps in Depression, Anxiety, Aggitation, ADD, and Mania.
I have pieces of ADD. I can't sit or do the same thing for very long- it starts to agitate me. But I can organize. So can I take the 'A' from ADD? I qualify for the all of depression = 'DEPRESSION'. I'd say I qualify for "ANXI" for anxiety. I know they consider Aggitation a part of mania, but I've sure never had anything that sounded like Mania to me. So I'm going to add a "AGG". A D E P R E S S I O N A N X I A G G is my diagnosis

Anyway...while we are on the subject, how is Depersonalization in the anxiety category? I don't feel any anxiety during or before I get it. In a way it's kind of relaxing.

It is very confusing to me. I agree that anxiety exists in all forms some with depression some without. And can't figure out how the ADD enters the mix as I have that problem also not being able to sit still for long. Wish some more people would post. Thanks Chiron. Phillipa

Depression. Okay, first, if you feel "sad", that's a great indicator. But some people, especially men, don't necessarily get sad. Instead they might feel irritable.

Second, a feeling of lack of energy and/or desire.
whereas, with anxiety, you want to do something but it makes you scared or gives you physical symptoms like racing heart.

The problem for me is figuring out the difference between anxiety and hypomania or especially what they call "mixed state", since I have all of them.

I actually don't think medical science has much of a clue unless a person's symptoms fit into a very well-defined category.
