Starting Parnate Tomorrow, Any Supportive Words?

I could sure use any advice from those of you who are more knowledgeable about Parnate - I'm both excited and nervous.

Hi Cheryl-Lynn and Paddo. I'm been on 20 mg of parnate since the beginning of June. I am starting my increase to 30 mg today. The only side effect I have is low blood pressure. I only had a couple of episodes of light-headedness which passed in a couple of seconds. I've been on Parnate before and it's at 30 mg the hypotension get bad..but we'll see how it goes this time.

Just pay careful attention to the dietary and medication restrictions and you will be OK.

Parnate is a good AD..it doesn't make me a social butterfly but it gives me great focus to stay on task. I hope increasing to 30 will end the bit of risidual depression I still have.

Keep posting! There are others here on parnate also. We're all here to support each other.

Cheryl-Lynn and paddo

I have been on Parnate for over a year now, and it is the only anti-depressant that has worked for me. I take 40 mg. per day, and as Justherself54 said, the main thing is to adhere to the dietary restrictions. I still eat pizza as it does not typically have aged cheese, for example. I drink white wine if I go out to eat rather than red wine or beer. I loved some foods that I can't eat, but so it is.

I took Parnate many years ago too, for about five years, and it worked wonders for me. As an added benefit, I lost weight and am losing weight again. It has amphetamine like qualities and so keeps me alert too. I feel like I have more energy and so do more and so lose weight.

I was able to go off of Parnate years ago and was on no antidepressant for around 10 years or more. Then some stuff came up, and I ended up getting depressed again, and so back to the Parnate. I am also in therapy, though, three times per week, and the combo is what does the job for me.

Many thanks for above information Justherself54 and Zeba , i am so pleased that Parnate has had an effect however big or small for you both , was Parnate the last resort of anti/dep meds ? The reason for that question , over the last decade or more i have tried so many different meds the list is endless , i have treatment resistant depression , i dont know if i said in my mail before , i also have SAD , OCD , ANXIETY/DEP , Zoloft helped in the beginning , but had a manic effect , which was good and bad , i had improvement in concentration and a social life for once , much like anything else it didnt take away the other symptoms sadly for me and then Poop out , at present i am withdrawing from Tofrinal, thank goodness , i was put in care 2 months ago , as i was very suicidal over life events etc , so treating psych doctor in care , suggested trying above med..yuk !! i came home from a month in there , family friends didnt need to tell me that i was much worse then before , i was told at the end of stay there , there is nothing more we can do in there , i was in such a state , lacking any concentration self-esteem that i didnt/couldnt question how they come to that conclusion , any way i am rambling now , thanks again for information , i have concerns about diet , blood pressure etc , oh well i have come this far , may i have a little " piece of peace " for a little while at least..thankyou again and please if you can keep in contact..i lack a lot of confidence etc..it was SO good that i had your kind thoughts..oh one more thing i am also doing therapy twice a week..so far i just so need stablity to go further with that..

I am bipolar, and my main problem is depression. I too have been on most everything and the MAOI's are my last-ditch effort, although my pdoc said if this doesn't work or poops out we'll have to get creative

I was really scared to start Parnate but most of the side effects are "physical" which I find easier to cope with for some reason.

I'm still learning about the diet. It's not too bad..it forces you to read labels and prepare meals more from "scratch", which is healthier in the long run..I'm probably overly-cautious..

If you have any questions, fire away! It gives me piece of mind to know there are others here on Parnate also. Let us know how you are doing...

Why aren't we all on Parnate..????

Sounds ideal.

- strong
- weight loss
- stimulant action

Wish I'd heard of it before I picked the California rocket fuel. Hmmm.....

Changing over would undoubtedly be traumatic though.

Definitely on my list for the future if the CRF poops out. :)

You have to be off of the other types of antidepressants for two weeks before you can start an MAOI like Parnate. That is the only negative other than the food restrictions. I especially miss once in awhile having a beer with pizza. Yes I eat pizza if it only has mozarella cheese as that is not an aged cheese which is a no no on an MAOI.

It's odd that the MAOIs got such a bad reputation for side-effects.

How any of you had significant side effects with Parnate?

If so, how before they passed?

Thanks

Mr M.

no significant side effects other than some slight hypotension and some insomnia if I take my last dose too late in the day..

Bad news from Wiki (re my depression anyway) is:

"Tranylcypromine [Parnate] is indicated for the treatment of major depressive episodes, "without melancholia". The major usage for tranylcypromine today is in the treatment of treatment-resistant depression and anergic atypical depression."

I definitely have melancholia... :( Too bad, sounded like a fine idea. Oh well.. there'll be more...

Thanks

Mr. M.

It worked for me with melancholia in the past. It was the only thing that worked. I could not get out of bed at the time.

Re side effects: When I took all 40 mg. in the a.m. I would become really tired around 2 p.m. and could barely stay awake. Now that I am taking 20 mg in the a.m. and 20 mg. at noon or around 1 p.m., I am doing much better. No more poop out at the 2 p.m. time. I now poop out around 10 p.m. and just go to bed.

we aren't all on parnate bc it doesn't work for everyone

i lost weight
worked out daily
my cuticles and nails unbothered
i looked fabulous

it was the self-loathing that snuck up on me

i'm happy to hear it works well for so many people but there isn't a drug that is for everyone

I'm on Parnate and I'm not getting weight loss or stimulant action. So...YMMV.
