Cyclothymia and neurotin

Posted by maclover on January 9, 2008, at 13:42:43

Hello! I am new to this board although I have been reading posts the last couple of weeks. Like many others, I am SO GLAD this is here. There is so very little information out there on cyclothymia.

I was diagnosed a couple of months ago and was first put on Lamictil. I loved it, but, broke out in a rash. My pdoc took me off of that and tried Topamax, I hated it. I was only on it for 9 days but, I was spaced out, REALLY tired and no appetite at all.
I just saw the doc yesterday and she wants me to come back in 2 weeks to be sure all the med's are out of my system. She wants to try Neurotin next.
I am currently also taking Effexor, have been on that for a couple of years now and it works great for my anxiety.

Is there anyone that also takes Effexor and Neurotin? If so, how did adding the Neurotin help? Side effects? I'm nervous about starting the new med beings that I had so much trouble with the Topamax.

Thanks!

I broke out with a fine rash on lamictal and it went away. If you restart it and titrate more slowly, you may have better results. There is a very slim chance of developing SJS from lamictal. I think its less than 1%.

Hi PB,

I did start the Lamictal very slowly, started with 25 mg and slowly increased over 4 weeks. I was fine until about 8-9 weeks into it. My pdoc said she didn't want to take any chances at all so she took me off of it. Sucks b/c like I said, I loved it. I didn't have any low mood swings and my irritability was under control as well.

Didn't get the rash excess salivation spitting every five seconds disgusting. Got to 50mg and it was fine. Phillipa

I was thinking more like 12.5mg. Some p-docs are too conservative. Lamictal is an excellent drug that doesn't make me feel druged like other mood stabilizers. I also take effexor. This combination works great for me. You can give neurontin a try, it might work out for you. From what I have gathered, it doesn't have the greatest mood stabilizing properties as the first line drugs.
