Nardil users - support needed

Posted by Justherself54 on November 2, 2007, at 12:11:57

I've had my prescription filled and sitting here for three days and I just can't seem to make myself take the first dose..this isn't unusual for me to be anxious when starting a new med, cause I've had some pretty bad side effects from some..

I was taking Parnate but due to some weird constant chills pdoc suggested Nardil..

I liked the focus and motivation from Parnate although I had no interest in leaving the house much..I've read that Nardil is better for social anxiety..but still can't make myself start "the journey"..

Any gentle nudges from Nardil users would be greatly appreciated..

If stargazer sees it or Ugottahave hope they will more than nudge you they feel it's a miracle drug and yes good for social anxiety. I do know how hard it is to start a med but look at it this way from my understanding parnate is much stronger so the nardil should be a piece of cake for you. Good luck. Phillipa

Thanks Phillipa..took a deep breath and took the first one..I think what's contributing to my usual anxiety is how crappy I'm still feeling after surgery on Sept. 12..just don't want to feel any worse..

Just,

I am on Nardil too and many of us are having good results so don't be afraid to join in.

What is your dosage? I took 45 for a few months and just recently increased to 60 mg since my depression cam back. The recommended dose is 1 mg/kg of weight, so if you weigh 70 kg (154#), you may have to take up to 70 mg.

Some of the earliest side effects are lightheadedness and dizziness from the lowering of your BP. Other than that you may not have alot of SE's, although I had a few more but wanted to stick with it and I happy that I did.

I have a long history of only responding to MAO's, with the exception of Parnate, so I'm thrilled than Nardil is working. I also take Nortriptylline but most pdocs are not saavy enough to add that to a MAO.

Just take it slow and stay at a dose long enough to get used to the SE's and then go to the next highest dose.

There's lots of users who can advise you as you begin your Nardil treatment. good luck and keep writing.

Stargazer

Sure- this is understandable. However, in my experience, I had the choice at one stage between sexual function and Nardil- and I choose Nardil!!! It really is that good.

Here is a tip- you obviously know the s/effects that MIGHT happen....have an antidote for each on hand...

Parnate sucked for me. Its a miracle for some, but not as efficacious as Nardil for the majority of people.

Before Nardil- I had extreme social anxiety- couldn't do so many things in public. After Nardil, I would do anything in public (within bounds)- it made me LOVE life, and LOVE getting outside and LOVE interacting with anyone and everyone- and it still does! I literally asked 5 girls out everyday for a while! (Pity I was 'out of action'!!!)

Hi,
Nardil augmented with clonazepam is the only med combo that has ever really worked for me. This is out of some 40+ different combinations of meds over the years. I have treatment resistant atypical depression with social anxiety and IMHO Nardil should be a 2nd tier trial for this illness. I've been on it for 11+ years and it is still working. Of course it has side effects, every medication does. Some of those side effects are positive. It lowers my borderline high blood pressure so no BP meds are necessary.
Take care,
Jedi

Hi Jedi same here - Nardil has done wonders for my blood pressure. Do weight gain and sexual dysfunction ever wear off though? These things become an issue as you start to feel better. I was on 90 mg but now down to 60, trying the maintenance idea Fred

Hi Fred,
I've found that the delayed ejaculation seems to become less of a problem over time. If it doesn't, I would have my free testosterone and estradiol checked. The testosterone should at least be in the midrange or high normal to battle this Nardil side effect. As we put on pounds and get older more of our testosterone is aromatized into estradiol and causes an imbalance between the male and female hormones.

For me the weight gain, mostly from sweet carbohydrate cravings, has been more of a problem. This is the main reason I have been off Nardil several times for other medication trials. At one point I had gained more than 100 lbs. from atypical depression and Nardil. I'm down 40 lbs. from there but still have a long way to go. I used to run daily and do ironman events, but when the major depression hit it was like I could not take another step. I have been able to exercise on Nardil, and this seems the only way I can take the weight off.
Be Well,
Jedi
