Terrible chills on Parnate

Posted by Justherself54 on October 5, 2007, at 23:34:41

After surgery I started back on Parante..back up to 20 mg..but have been so chilled I spend most of my day trying to warm up..pdoc said to decrease to 10 mg. to see if the chills quit, then we would know it was the parnate..will also be geting thyroid checked but have never had problems with levels for 10 years or so (I take 100 mc per day..

Has anyone experienced chills with Parnate and if so did they subside..I really want to get up to 30 mg to get more benefit..am really concerned I won't be able to continue with Parnate and then it's back to a very bleak drawing board..although he did mention Nardel...

Same dose of thryroid I'm on did they do bloodwork to check it as if it gets hyper or close to you get hot so the opposite it could have gone up. Did you get the thyroid med after the surgery? Phillipa

Chills/increased sensitivity to cold is one of the characteristic side effects of Parnate. It might lessen with time as your body adjusts to the drug. Have you been checking your blood pressure? A drop in blood pressure is another characteristic side effect, and I think the two might be linked (many hypotensive drugs cause chills as a side effect). I'm not sure why it happens, maybe the drop in blood pressure means there's less blood flowing to the extremities - hence extremities are more easily chilled and send more 'I'm chilly' signals to the brain?

I'm guessing your "chills" are related to parnate induced, hypotension. This (hypotension) is THE most common side-effect associated with parnate. It should disappear in a few weeks.

Also watch that you may not have taken something that would have interacted. Chills can also be a symptom of serotonin syndrome. Are you taking it with any opiates or painkillers?

I never missed a dose of my eltroxin and didn't start back on Parnate until I no longer needed the pain meds..pre-surgery when I was on 20 mg. I didn't have these chills and I'm very careful with what I eat..

If I have another day of chills I'll go have my blood pressure taken..see where it's at..I had to discontinue parnate about 3 years ago due to severe hypotension, but so far it hasn't been a problem for me..just these chills..

Thanks everyone for your responses..much appreciated..

Last BP check was 107/68..Pdoc is ordering thyroid function test, B12 (cause I was very low at my last physical) and hemoglobin, so will see what turns out..very frustrated as I was hoping to get to 30 mg..but am stuck at 10 right now..he has mentioned switching to Nardil..not sure about that..think it would be the same problems..man oh man..i sure would like to get off this med merry-go-round..sigh..
