Posted by olysi79 on September 21, 2007, at 8:28:03

I recently was put on Topamax 50 MGS (Ive been on it before). I started at 25 MGS, went to 50 MGS a week later.
I've had thr worst leg pains! stiffness, cramps, etc.... also, constipation, which is not normal for me, Are the common for topamax?

Olysia, in looking at the PI, yes there are reported incidents of these but they were not high reported incidents. I get tingly feelings in my feet and neck intially. The neck has faded but the feet thing is still with me three years later. I stil have memory loss, but blurry vision has faded. Some of these may fade as your body gets used to the medication and they may not. What did the doc put you on it for. For me I decided a long time ago the side effects were liveable versus the headaches I had before. My neuro says many people have worse side effects and if you can tolerate topamax then it is a good drug for you. I tolerate it. For some it is not. I have stiffness and get cramps but I take supplements to offset some of my side effects and I think they help. Again you must decide how bad they are. Why did you go off of it before? How high does the doc want you to go?

I have been on 120mg daily for a while - with no cramping etc. I do have to make the effort to exercise and drink plenty of fluids tho. I find swimming or any water activity works well, if you can find a hot tub even better - do your exercises in warmer water if avail. BUT keep the fluids up - will help with the constapation and poss. fluid retention? Good Luck

It would help to know how long? There is the possibility of kidney stones which is why you are suppose to drink alot of water. But if you haven't been on it long that probably isnt a factor. I have been on 200 mg. and been on it for 3 years. I am on it for migraines and partial seizures. I have side effects but again I chose to overlook them. I also have collitis and ABS but I don't think it has had much of an effect on either.

I was put on topamax as an adjunct for OCD, anxiety, and for the nightmares/vivid dreams I was having on my SSRI. lowering the dose a dab helped me tremendously!!!!
No more leg pain... that's pretty interesting. We'll see though, it's all about finding that sweet spot with meds.

I've been on Topomax for year now at 200mg. I've been taking it for a little over a year now and have had two kidney stones and I drink plenty of water daily. Also the only symptom that hasn't gone away is the feet tingling but even with these side effects listed, I wouldn't trade my topomax for the world...lol

Rina I am with you on the feet tingling. I drink no water as I hate it and yes I know I need to. i Have been on it for three years and no kidney stones. They did ultrasound my kidney because my ulthrea's looked enlarged, I was having extreme pain and 7 vic's didn't touch it, yes I took that many as I was hurting, but it was the cymbalta that set off an extreme case of collitis, anyway the kidneys were fine. Go figure. I am sorry about thekidney stones i have had several friends say they hurt bad. I did drinnk alot of water in the beginning but over time I have drifted away from it. I have lousy memory still but I would not trade my topa for anythingeither. It has all but erased those migraines. I get a bad headache from time to time especially when the doc ups my medication like recently but after a few days I am ok again. My insurance doesn't cover the whole expense either but I don't care. And even if is making my anxiety worse as some have indicated it might I will stay on it. For me most of the symptons eased up over time. The taste thing is still with me, I don't mind. I have to remind myself to eat but that is doable as well. I am better after three years. And it hasn't pooped out because soda still taste flat. LOL

Yeah the topomax with the lamictal some said produce a bit of cognitive issues but I think I've had them prior so I can't honestly say it was contributed to the medicine. I do want to have my pdoc add something for social anxiety but I don't want anything too sedating. Guess I can't ask for too much at this point.

Good luck with that. I need something for anxiety too. I hopefully will find a good p-doc soon.
