I went off 300 mg in under two weeks with no withdrawal symptons by halving the dose every couple of days. Good luck. - Jane

Hi Mags,
I tried e-mailing you twice, (and I did delete the nospam) but they both came back to me. This is what my message said ...

Thanks for your e-mail address. I can't remember exactly the meds you are taking (or have taken) but remember how similar you seemed to me.

How are you doing with your decreased Lamictal? Do you feel any better? Are you planning to go off of it entirely, or see if you can recapture how you felt in the beginning, at the lower doses?

I'm feeling awful. I've decreased the Lamcital to 75 mg for a few days, and thought I felt better, but I feel worse again. Maybe as I get lower I'll get my energy and my ability to think clearly back again.

I hope we can help each other out with our "dilemmas!" I'm meeting my pdoc tomorrow, so I'll fill you in on what we decide to do.

Looking forward to hearing back from you as well.

> Doing the same as you (not for same reasons..I read your post re getting pregnant...good luck!!) I am down to 50 Mgs from 75..haven't notice any bad withdrawal...as you said before it seems like so much of our experiences are the same... Why don't you e-mail me directly and we can discuss further...just delete the nospam.

Hi Cindy, Sorry my address shouldn;t of had the period between my names!! Duh....try it again..margboyd@scsinternet.com
Hope my address works this time..Itoo am feeling awful..I ma down to 50MG. I don't see my doc until feb 1 so I guess i will hang in at that dose...but i sure wish I was feeling better...I think I an going to ask him to augment the Lamictal with something else. When I look at my history I can't tolerate large doses of anything! So I am going to see what he thinks of the following in small doses
Lamictal, Neurontin,
Prozac, Wellbrutrin and Provigil...we shall see good luck tomorrow..try my email again.

This thread may be dead, but I would like to know if anyone has successfully tapered off Lamictal in the interim since the most recent Lamictal message last year. I am currently at 200 mg and tapering off an AD so I wouldn't try to taper off Lamictal until I am past the withdrawal for the AD.

Hi Bela.

I've been on and off Lamictal a few times, and never really had a problem weaning off of it. You should not stop taking it abruptly so as to avoid seizure. You should be able to reduce the dosage by 50mg every 3-5 days, perhaps going to 25mg at the end. I experienced a bit of insomnia at first, but that was it. I doubt it will be an unpleasant experience.

Good luck.

I went off 200 mg of Lamictal cold turkey last week with no effect. I just started Dilantin because the lamictal wasn't do anything.

I've been on Lamictal for over a year.
Have had side effects mentioned here and elsewhere on the net, of, bad short-term memory loss, inability to remember common words, typing totally wrong words in a sentence even when I'm thinking the correct word and fuzzy thinking
(kind of a heavy head), also lethargy.
This was really interferring with my ability to work, which I am doing for the first time in years. (a bookkeeper NEEDS to be able to think and remember numbers)

BUT IT DID HELP MY BIPOLAR MOODS.

I've tried to cut down slowly, to stop the side effects, and my memory and loss of words have greatly improved.

BUT ........... whenever I forget to take my dose, I experience bad flu-like symptoms and dizziness ........ sounds a little like SSRI withdrawal symptoms to me (which I didn't have,
but Effexor withdrawal symptoms were horendous)

Stupid bipolar.....meds are always bad one way or another....mood stabilizers often leave me with no mood at all.....miss the highs and feeling good.

Me too

> Have had side effects mentioned here and elsewhere on the net, of, bad short-term memory....

i have had increased acne and lethargy. Its so hard to tell what feelings are a result of what. I think it has made my tummy more sensitive. I also have bad short term memory. But I dont know if thats b/c of being a pot head for four years prior.

> BUT IT DID HELP MY BIPOLAR MOODS.

me too!

> I've tried to cut down slowly, to stop the side effects, and my memory and loss of words have greatly improved.

I should have cut down slowly. I just quit all at once.(I wantd to see if it was causingg my severe acne. My skin has cleared up alot since getting off it.)I feel moody (what a petty sounding word for such a sh*tty feeling of blasts and distances...) I am more clumsy and irritable and lower sex drive. And im paranoid I think. Am i paranoid? Or am I just paranoid? (Ha. Jokes.)
Iwonder if this toruture Im going through is plain old withdrawl, exasterbated withdrawl due to my stopping cold turkey, or just the feeling bi-polarity returning.

I have noticed no improvements since stopping Lamictal besides my acne getting better. And maybe I have less headaches.

> Stupid bipolar.....meds are always bad one way or another....mood stabilizers often leave me with no mood at all.....miss the highs and feeling good.

I know. Thanks for your post.

Here was the funny thing about Lamictal for me. First of all I'm on it for the second time. I took it a year ago for a year at 200mg. It worked wonderfully for that year, then popped out. I insisted my pdoc get me off of it. We titrated and did it slowly mind you. It didn't matter. Bad thing for me!! My mood was all over the place like a bounce check with overdraft fees on a negative balance checking account..lol After that, we tried drug after drug after drug to stabilize my mood. Nothing with a double"N" It took me trying Lamictal again and thank goodness it took me back without a vengeance or else I might be outside the post office picking up cigarette butts...Good Luck!!

I don't find lamictal dangerous at all. I no longer have seizures and it has an antidepressant effect. No side effects. Millions of people take it.

Psychosis is an infrequent (1/100 to 1/1000) side effect, according to the monograph.

I am 25 and was on Prozac from when I was 12 until when I was 24. It worked well for me, but as I got older my Doc sugested I try a mood stabilizer for the manic swings. I have been taking Lamictal for a year and have felt the most stable and happy I have felt in my life.

I have always struggled with acne and I began accutane. I didn't respond to the accutane treatment and my dermatologist suggested that the Lamictal may have been keeping me from reacting positively to the accutane acne treatment. So 5 weeks ago I got off the Lamictal to find out. Im so out of sorts without the Lamictal I cant remember to take the accutane! Its like im in a dream, horrible memory, nasua, bi-polarity +++ Its really hard.

It is so bad that Im starting to wonder if I am worse now than I was before I went on the Lamictal. I cant really remember how I was before - when I took no medicine - it was so long ago. I don't remember my early years being this bad. Is it possible that being on Lamictal can make you worse than ever before if you stop it?

You might want to look at the high instance of depression with accutane.

I thought Lamictal didnt have a deppressive effect on me b/c I was taking it while on the Lamictal - which probably safeguarded me against it, and now that Im without the Lamictal...

Thank you so much. How is your life with medicine?

Jereon,
A dangerous med for you (and some others)... yet a fantastic med for others that has provided relief.

Everyone is different... different genes, different chemistry... We all may have various reactions to meds.. some may be similar, some may be different. No one med is "dangerous" for everyone (unless the FDA has found it to be as such and will then most likely yank it).

To others:
This is a perfect example in that we all must be cautious of what we read on the boards and on the internet...experience does not equate to scientific expertise. We can share, offer suggestions, and help each other out... but this type of posting does no good.
