Has anyone tried various NMDa antagonists like amantadine, riluzole, or memantine to treat bipolar depression? If so, was it effective at all?
I am particularly interested to know if anyone has tried the amantadine or memantine because the riluzole is way way to expensive to ever consider.
Also, I think I read somewhere that magnesium was an NMDA antagonist, would this have the same effect? Thanks

Magnesium and Zinc are NMDA antagonists and both have effect on mood in some cases of depression, thought they have secondary effects which make them differ.
I think theanine has some NMDA affinity.
SLS, if you remember him, tried Riluzole, but I don't think he noticed too much effect. It was for bipolar depression.

Thanks for the input,
I was looking at some abstracts on riluzole and it indicated that it may work for bipolar depression by regulating glutamate, do all NMDA antagonists do this?

I am certainly not an expert on the workings of glutamate modulating agents.
There are compounds that modulate glutmate which are not NMDA antagonists.
Vitamin C, for instance, has antiglutamatergic properties, but is not an NMDA antagonist.
