stomachache on zoloft

Posted by LlurpsieNoodle on August 10, 2007, at 11:00:37

My moods have been very well impacted by this med. I'm taking 50mg of it, and also 5mg abilify, some sonata and clonazepam prn (about .5-1.0 mg daily) and 300mg lamictal.

The only problem with this cocktail is that my stomach (upper GI is really upset). I've been taking rantidine (generic) acid reducer, and rolaids about 5 times a day, some sodium bicarbonate, lots of ginger and peppermint tea. It's there in the am, there in the pm, and is affecting my appetite.

Worried I might get an ulcer or gastic reflux. I remember reading that a spoonful of something acidic, like cider vinegar may paradoxically signal the sphincter at the bottom of the esophagus to close, but I was wondering if anyone had any other suggestions.
-prilosec?
-maalox?

Will this go away with time? It makes me want to lie down on my left side and I can't do much housework because I don't want to bend over.

sorry for the rant.

-Ll
(p.s. I really like zoloft otherwise. this is so frustrating!)

I know SSRI's affect the stomach of a lot of people as most of the SSRI affects the gut. My advise call your doc and see if he can order you something as it sounds very painful to me. Good luck lurpsie. Love Phillipa

My experience with Zoloft was that I had some GI problems at first, but they went away pretty quickly. Maybe a couple of weeks? I can't remember exactly, but they did go away quickly.

I hope that's the case for you, as well.

Have you tried taking it with a lot of water, or other fluid, or a meal? Sometimes that helps with stomach ache caused by various meds; don't know about zoloft.

This is more like an all-day stomach ache. Feels like my body is just producing way too much acid. I usually take all my meds with breakfast, and I haven't had coffee in about 2 weeks. Doing pretty well on green tea, ginger tea and peppermint tea. plenty of water- that's an idea.

thanks,

Are you sure this side effect isn't due to Abilify? I had terrible acid heartburn for the three days I took it, and I think it's a well-documented side effect of that drug. SSRIs usually cause nausea, vomiting and diarrhea as GI side effects rather than acid stomach.

Hmm, interesting. So, the funny thing is that I forgot to take my abilify for 4 days (I was doing so well for those 4 days, too!!) and I still had the stomachache.

tangent- I figured I better start taking the abilify again since I discontinued geodon night before last. don't wanna go bonkers.

Hope I'm not doing a double-whammy to my system. At least no "lower G-I" side effects.

Meanwhile it's a good day to stay in bed with cats and a book on how not to procrastinate. My thermometer reads 64 degrees F inside the house. And my ear has water in it. cats seem obliging. you got cats?

Well if that's true it doesn't sound like it's the Abilify then.

Yes, I think I would if I were you too.

have you tried taking it with some yogurt? I know yogurt helps when taking some types of antibiotics that cause stomach upset, so maybe it might be worth a shot..

hi jhers,
I was drinking some kefir every morning (kind of in between yogurt and buttermilk - live cultures) and it seemed to make it worse, since kefir is acidic.

Good idea though- I tend to wipe out all my healthy bacteria on a regular basis with antibiotics and stuff. poor bacteria.

I have been trying to drink a lot of fluids all day long, (Honore's suggestion) and I think it's worth it. Maybe since I wasn't eating enough all those protons were just getting WAY too concentrated!

the best antacid I found was bicarbonate (baking soda). kind of burpy and nasty to drink, but works instantly.

And rantidine, 2x daily (OTC acid reducer, generic).

No tummy ache since late yesterday afternoon.

Seems to get worse when I'm nervous, which is frequently since I'm tapering down my klonopin and expecting 25 guests for dinner tonight.

back to the maalox and peppermint tea routine. I haven't taken the zantac in about a week. if it gets real bad today I'll go to that.

pain about 4
