Weird Shrink!!!

Posted by Guy on July 9, 2007, at 18:57:56

Last week I went to a local pdoc in the hope that I wouldn't have to travel all day to see my existing pdoc in another city. After listening to my woes regarding anxiety and panic he announced that I have akathesia which he believes to be induced by my "toxic" medications. (I don't think this is true. I have severe anxiety, but no need to constantly move.) He said I need a complete "wash-out" of all meds to see what's what, and that if I can't cope he will have me hospitalized. This really scared me as I envisioned myself writhing in agony from anxiety and lack of sleep. I pointed out that people who end up in hospital are almost always medicated after admission, and that that would defeat the purpose of a wash-out. He said "I know." He then went on to discuss my father who changed his name after the war because it sounded too German. He asked me to consider the possibility that my father did this because he had actually been a German sympathiser. I told him I could care less if it were true, and that I know lots of Germans who are wonderful people. My homework until the next session was to look for more family secrets. When I phoned to cancel all further appointments, I was put through to him and he recited all his accomplishments including professorships at various universities. He was very arrogant, and when I said that I know which meds I can and cannot tolerate, he snapped back that it is not my role to play doctor. Anyway, the worst part was the arrogance. I really hate being talked down to and treated as if I am a child.

Worse than arrogant dangerous to me. And isn't criteria for admission now suicicidal or psychotic? Hope you are going back to the other one . I'm sure you are. Love Phillipa

Wowser!
He's a winner, huh?

I have had my share of jerks but what a weirdo!

At least he was so brazenly weird you don't have to suffer through being hurt and angry as you would if there was some question as to the validity of the man.

Time to drive a bit I guess.

Maybe the problem was that you warmed up to the guy and opened up expecting help. He saw it differently; he felt that you were a softie and tried to have complete control over you by taking you off of all your meds. That explains why he intervened in your cancellation call to his secretary to recount all his so-called achievements. Maybe an approach to a new pdoc is to ask him for a specific med to check out his specific knowledge and to see his approach to patients generally, rather than expect help from him on complicated issues from the start. But again it's easy to say so in retrospect and when I am not you. Good riddance of him.

Guy,

I agree that him asking you to look for family secrets sounds really ridiculous.

But maybe he wanted you to come off all meds (as horrifying as that probably seems) in order to try you on new drugs one by one to see what your reaction to them would be.

Just wondering what you were hoping to get from this pdoc when you went to see him? Had you a drug in mind or were you hoping he would put you on something new?

Denise

If what you say is accurate this guy sounds like a total nutcase. Seriously. I wouldn’t listen to anyone who recommends going off all medications at once. I would consider finding someone else, fast!

A weird shrink? An arrogant doctor? Get out of town. Surely you jest. Yes, being sarcastic. Didn't you know that it is quite the rage and cutting-edge psychiatry to relieve anxiety and panic by researching ones' heritage for Nazi ties. I would think it would increase such symptoms. Perhaps he was just projecting his own issues with his great uncle being Joseph Mengele, which would explain his sadistic desire to see you "writhing in agony from anxiety and lack of sleep". Did you tell him that his arrogant attitude actually stems from his deep insecurity? :)

Just remember a lot of psychiatrists are people who couldn't cut it as real doctors. A lot of doctors (my father included, who is a Radiologist) do not have a lot of respect for them.

Their profession used to be more involved in Freudian psychoanalysis. Now they basically dish out the same 2 dozen or so meds. If it weren't for SSRIs, what would they do?

I don't want to sound bitter and ungrateful - but shrinks cost so much friggin money a lot of them are so arrogant. There are a lot of good professinal p-docs, but no one likes to take crap from someone who charges $200 per hour.

Excellent point mattye and the say the same things in a different way about surgeons and ER docs don't want to become involved with people. There jobs allow them to do their work and get rid of the patients fast. At least a GP or internist talks to their patients. Love Phillipa

Very interesting! It explains so much in regard to other doctors lack of respect for them.

It is interesting to note that the most arrogant doctors I have encountered are p-docs. Things that make you go hmmm. Perhaps they suffer an inferiority complex due to this lack of respect amongst their peers; somehow they sense this.

I have put a few in their place, as I do not tolerate the arrogance for a second. Not when I have not been the least bit impressed with most doctors understanding of the human body. I could write a book on how stupid doctors are.

I am not ashamed to admit that I am bitter at the unbelievably inferior treatment I have and have not received in my treatment for hypothyroidism. I have 16 books on thyroid and know more than my so-called endocrinologists know - sad to say. Fortunately I have FINALLY found a D.O. that is on the same page with me, agreed with me entirely with treatment, and not surprisingly I am getting better. He is the nicest person, not an arrogant bone in his body, but that all most likely is due to his confidence. He doesn't have to compensate for being an idiot by being arrogant. My unfortunate experience has been that most doctors are not very bright.

So how do you like it? Can you explain what the differences in feelings are and if there is a special time to take it with or without food. Is this an endo or naturopath. Thanks Phillipa
