How long does Parnate take to kick in?

Posted by Malcolm64 on April 29, 2007, at 10:30:48

And what's the theraputic dose? I'm up to 20 mgs until Tuesday, then I go up to 30 mg on which I will remain until I see my doc around May 15th. I'm just curious, what's the max doseage you can be on before you know whether the med is going to work or not?

And how can you tell if the med is working? Hypomania (which was wonderful) was the reaction I felt when I knew that the Nardil was working when I took it a year ago. Unfortunately, it slowly dissipated to the point where I was no longer getting a boost from the Nardil.

I'm sorry if my posts seem repetitive, but I'm getting really anxious to find out whether Parnate is going to work or not.

So far, my sleep hasn't been affected at all on 20 mgs of Parnate, which I know is notorious for causing sleep problems. So I'm wondering if b/c I'm not having that problem (yet) means that the drug is not working. Or perhaps it hasn't yet built up in my system.

Ok, I guess my anxiety is really showing, but I'm just getting so restless for SOMETHING to work!!

At the same time, I'm bit embarrased to be a man and having these problems. Men are supposed to be tough, and I guess I'm just not tough enough!!

Hey Malcolm, there's absolutely nothing week about being depressed- there really is no reason for you to feel embarrassed. In fact, I would be more inclined to say that it is a sign of strength and character to admit you have a problem you cannot deal with yourself, and that you need help.
I'm starting parnate myself in 1 week, so I'll be curious to read answers to your post! I'm so hopeful that it'll work for me- my first MAOI

It's very rare for 20 mg to be a therapeutic dose.

That's considered to be generally between 30-60 mg. Some people need more, but that's much less common-- and some pdocs might not go any higher.

Parnate has an initial activating effect, which often is felt earlier than the AD effect. The true AD effect takes longer to kick in. Not as long as SSRIs, often, but it also can continue to increase over a period of months, too.

Hope you avoid the sleeping problems.

Honore

Parnate made me much worse at the beginning, it was only in the second week that I noticed a big improvement at 40mg. I tended to need doses of about 80-120mg to get the best effects. Most people seem to take it with a benzo or another sleep aid at night.
