parnate, staring into space, lethargy.

Posted by stevezen on April 10, 2007, at 16:24:53

so it's been a month now on 10mg's twice daily, one when I wake, one at lunch. I honestly cannot believe the detrimental effects this MAOI has had on me. it's thrown all it's side negative effects my way, extreme daytime fatigue, lack of sleep, feeling cold, feeling dizzy, no appetite, and I've yet to experience anything positive whatsoever. it's not easy, when your depressed and lethargic at the best of times, you kinda pin your hopes on something just to find they worsen your symtoms times ten.
sorry to complain, but can anyone see any reason I should stay on parnate? will these side effects subside?

Hello
Your sleep is bad? Could you say what it is like?
A month is a long time in my book.

hey declan!
I wouldn't say it's super bad. I mean I do usually take .5mg klonopin just to make sure I get some zzz's but my kip time is basically cut in half by the parnate. before i'd get at least 8 hours, now it's more like 4.
hope it helps you some.

Hello Steve

So Parnate worsened your symptoms by a factor of 10?

I sort of liked the dopaminergic feel of 10mg/d, but it wasn't of any practical use and made me feel slightly uneasy. This became more noticeable when I went to 20mg.

I took it with SAMe (400mg/am) and that was dreadful. Had trouble walking past people.

You have made it this far. Ppl say it just kicks in one day out of blue. You are so close. Hang in there!

Next to try:
1. Increase Parnate dose
2. Parnate + TCA

thanks for the encouragment UgottaHaveHope. I just don't think I can be on parnate one minute longer i'm affraid :(
actually, I was kind of dreading someone would encourage me to stick with it. it's so hard to make any kind of decision when your as depressed as I am, it's crippled me for the last 11 years.
but I just took 10mg's yesterday morning, that was my last dose methinks. I slept so much more soundly last night. okay, today I'm so low summers coming back, everyone is outside enjoying their easter break in the sunshine, I was hoping I could join them this year for a nice change, but it looks as though I'll be stuck indoors, again.
declan, I would say a major symtom of my depression is feeling lethargic and tired, that was definitely exaggerated by parnate. I just didn't see that going away, even slightly over the 4 weeks I took this med. Provigil did help some days, but not others. it's like usually where there's an up, there's a down. but this was just down down down, usually about an hour after taking a dose. 10mg's was kind of tolerable, 20mg's just sent me spinning, literally, I was dizzy about 4-5 times each day.
that in itself was okay, but the tiredness and lethargy is what really making me think twice about parnate.
anyway, I'd really like to hear if anyone else thinks i should stay on. UgottaHaveHope's post has got me thinking. I have gone a month, it'd be a real shame if this was on the verge of actually doing something positive and I threw in the towel.
thanks for your input guy's.

I know how you feel. My two weeks on Nardil hasn't been as glorious as some others on this board have made it to be. However, what keeps me going is HOPE. The fact is, MAOIs have helped thousands and thousands. That is why they are still around after 50+ years. They do work.

Yes, you will read stories all the time how ppl feel so-so for a while and then one morning they wake up and their whole world is changed.

Please give it a few more weeks. Post questions on here for others taking Parnate. Are you only taking 20mg per day? If so, thats a very low dose (altho other on Parnate could elaborate).

Yes, I would HATE it if you quit and were only a day or two away from having your world rocked in a positive way. As much as you hate how you feel, you owe it to yourself a fair trial. So close ...

thanks soo much UgottaHaveHope. today was just awful, I had such high hopes for this med from scouring through forums and reading such positives.
well, usually I take 20mgs per day, 10 in the mornig 10 at luncheon.
yesterday, I just had 10, and today, after much deliberation I decided to have another 10.
I know it's a stupidly low dose. would it be safe to increase it quite dramatically do you think. I'd quite like to go up to 30 or 40 and see how I get on at these dose ranges. maybe it'd flip the switch in my brain happy/sad happy/sad
hehe, just kidding. arghh what am I to do?

I cant encourage or recomend that, but i will say knowing the drug quite well, its either me or the drug, but it is not as potent, and at a time when 10 mg alone had good effects, that dose for me is actualy counter productive and makes me feel terrable.I even tried a 20 mg break up as u are on and i could not bear it.

Now i dose twice a day at 40mg or 50mg TOPS FOR ME.I think the med has been through a change with all the reformulations, again i cant advise u to try a higher dose, but i do say for me it makes the differance of the med worth taken.

P.S Parnate will potiante klonopin and not vice versa,so your klonopin dose will be stronger on parnate.Just fyi if ur taking such a low dose to start and on top using klono, sounds like u really do need to get up there in dose range.

You have to keep in mind that "having your world rocked in a major way" is only a transient reaction. That euphoria doens't last. Eventually it goes back down to normal levels. Nardil did indeed "rock my world" that one fine day last summer when it finally kicked in (and rock my world is really an understatement of how wonderful it was), but the effect lasted only about four weeks. That's why I stopped it.

So yes, I would continue with the Nardil by all means, but just remember that when it finally kicks and you get that enormous enormous boost in self confidence and outlook, it may last a few weeks, maybe even a few months if you're lucky, but eventually the euphoria does go back down to normal levels.

When you think about it, it's not normal for anyone to stay in that sustained hypomanic state indefinitely. At least not with anything that's legal.

i just reviewed my posts
i stayed on parnate for 5 months
the upbeat part of my personality packed her bags and left
my pdoc thought that was acceptable
i stared into space often
wasn't depressed
lost weight
cuticles and nails absolutely unworried
worked out like crazy
slowly slipped into a state of self loathing that was so bad that it took a long time to understand that it was the meds
i just thought i desereved for my life to be horrible because i was such a loser
i didn't "stop taking" parnate i "escaped"

Malcolm: I have never experienced any euphoria or hypomanis state on any med, including Nardil. Maybe I came across incorrectly. By "rocking your world" I simply meant feeling good, or like the average person. Thats all I care about. To feel how I did 10 years ago before this started. Thanks, Michael

thanks guy's for keeping this thread going. lot's of interesting opinions and it's great to learn from other people's experiences.
although, I though it was nardil that went through all the re-formulations. did parnate suffer the same fate?
I'm taking the tiny little red ones with no markings, I think it's the non sugar coated version.
I think partially though, I've been feeling so rough because I'm only just now (5 weeks later) feeling the effects of stopping prozac.
the day when I decided to stop parnate was just awful, it was like a wall of terrible emotions hitting me square in the jaw every 5 seconds. I took no joy in anything, like everything was pointless.
well, I took 10mg's parnate, and 100mg's 5htp (I hope it's okay to mix those two, I think it is but not totally sure) and I seem to be on a bit more of an even keel.
I'm gonna work towards increasing my parnate dose though, I'll just try and take it slowly.
that's soo good to know about parnate potentiating klonopin, thanks for that snippet of info, much appreciated.
I got my k-pin dose down to .25mg's before bed, but I soo need to get a pill shaver or something.
anyways, thanks so much everyone for contributing.
take care each and everyone of you out there.

You can take up to 4mg of Klonopin and ... » stevezen

Of course we care. Please keep posting your thoughts and experiences. If it me, I would HATE it that I went through a Parnate trial (with all the initial side effects that are supposed to lessen in time or go away) and quit a day or two before it kicked in. Give it the full two months, and if it doesnt work then you can walk away from it forever knowing you gave it a fair trial and have eliminated one drug.

I LOVE your idea about increasing Parnate ASAP. Your current regiment seems so low, altho I dont know much about Parnate.

Here is a great website to read on Parnate (tranycypromine). Dr. Ken seems to be a MAOI expert and answers questions via email but keep them short.

cheers for that Ugottahavehope, much appreciated and very sound advice ;)
so I'm gonna push onward and upward with the parnate, 30 mg's today, feeling cold, dizzy and fatigued even moreso than 20mgs, to be expected though I guess. provigil has been helping some but I'm keeping the doses on the low side.
thanks for the website! I'll have a little read of that later, and if these symtoms persist I may send the doc a message.
be safe everyone, take care
