Can I take basic Benadryl on Nardil?

Posted by UgottaHaveHope on April 7, 2007, at 18:09:47

First of all, I know you cant take the Benadryl for allergies and COLD ... FOR SURE, because of the ingredients for cold.

I did take the basic Benardyl on Emsam with no problem.

I am trying to replace Seroquel with Benadryl to alleviate daytime sedation. Anyone?

Benadryl is an antihistamine. It's OK with MAOIs. It's decongestants (e.g., pseudophedrine) that are dangerous. What you need to beware of are pills that combine antihistamines and decongestants. Most drugs promoted as "cold remedies" fall into this category, and therefore cannot be mixed with MAOIs.

Have you cut down on the seroquel first? Love Phillipa

I wanted to add, that my pdoc, perhaps for benighted reasons, insists that benadryl is not okay. I mentioned to him that people here said it was-- but he was firm in his denial of it.

I'm assuming he either hasn't caught up on things (which is possible, but not so likely), or he's insisting because I tend to be sensitive to some medical interactions. Wanted to say, though, that there maybe some complexity to the question.

I've had similar experiences to that described above. However, the one doc I met who was an expert in MAOis told me unequivocally that benadryl (by which he meant dipenhydramine only) was okay. Less specialized docs seem unsure, in my experience.

Thanks, psychobot5000. Next time I get a bad cold, to which I'm pretty prone, I'll ask my pdoc and see if he can look into it further. He's usually pretty well informed, so I"m sure he'll be interested in knowing

I have problems with claritin, so I'm not sure-- but that would make it even better if I could use it.
