Do benzo's effect endorphins?

Posted by falconman on April 9, 2007, at 8:18:29

I think I read that benzodiazepine use negatively effects the bodies endogenous opioid system? Does anyone know about this? In light of the fact that in some people benzo use can cause or exacerbate depression, could this give credability to an Endorphin Deficiency Syndrome being a possible cause of depression/anxiety disorders?
Thanks

Are the majority of people who have found opioids beneficial to their mood, also been taking or have previously been taking benzo's longterm?

Benzos effect GABA:

How do they work?
The drugs operate on receptors in the brain producing a neurochemical called gamma aminobutyric acid. This stops the receptors in the brain receiving stress-causing messages from the outside world. This means the brain's natural chemicals, called endorphins, that are released in stressful situations have less to contend with. This means the patient will feel calmer. But owing to the brain's natural rebalancing this effect will only be short term.

At least some of the benzos influence endorphin and enkephalin levels in the blood and CFS. There seems to be a difference between the acute effects and chronic effects. I have seen no evidence that endorphin levels are associated with mood or anxiety disorders. At least, that I recall.
