Wellbutrin - negligible dopamine effect?

Posted by mattye on April 8, 2007, at 22:21:03

I remember reading somewhere that recent research has shown that Wellbutrin has less effect on dopamine than previously advertised . . . that it primarily works on norepinepherine and its effect on dopamine is negligible.

Is this true?

Thats a maybe. But most likely very little, is what I remember. Negligible.

From the studies I came across, on average users of ~300mg per day achieved approximatetly 35% inhibition of dopamine reuptake. So yes you are going to get appreciable effect on dopamine uptake, but it is questionable as to wheather this totally accounts for clinical effect.

If I remember right, however, bupropion also decreases dopamine release, leaving a net-effect of a more slight increase in extrasynaptic dopamine.
