How long do sedatives stay in your system?

Posted by Cynthia_Greene on April 6, 2007, at 16:59:43

If I stopped taking Valium and Xanax to see how I would do without them, how long would it be before all traces of the drugs would be out of my system? I'm just curious, because someone on another site once said that sedatives can stay in for up to a month.
I'm also worried about withdrawal, even though I took them as needed and didn't develop any tolerance.
I'm probably worrying for nothing.

Valium metabolizes into other active substances (e.g. oxazepam and temazepam), some of which have very lengthy half-lives. As do, in turn, the various inactive metabolites of the active metabolites. In a sense, the fact that someone had used Valium weeks back might be detectable by analysis of the urine (I'm thinking hypothetically, as the concentration of metabolites does fall to incredibly low levels over an extended timeframe), but the functional/active effects would disappear in days.

If you can continue using them as needed, the long-term metabolites issue is of no relevance.
