Tegretol questions

Posted by Deniseuk190466 on March 31, 2007, at 16:46:45

The other day because of my anxiety and because I was just feeling generally pissed off, fed up, frustrated and wanting to try anything to feel different.

I found some tegretol in my drawer and took 400mg of it for a couple of days. I found that it actually helped a lot with my anxiety because it made me feel so tired. Although I still felt depressed on it, I sort of liked the feeling of tiredness and was able to fight it to some degree.

In a strange way I felt a bit better on the tegretol even if it was for a couple of days, or maybe I just liked feeling different.

I was wondering if any body on this board had taken it long term for Treatment Resistant Depression and with what results?

Thanks....Denise

Quotes from remedyfind.com...

"have had very good results
never had any side effects goes well with other medication still working after long term use"

"I've been taking this stuff for a long time- over 10 years."

"I understand it can be helpful for people diagnosed with bipolar disorder (i.e manic/depressive) but I'm not bioplar.
I suffer from OCD and depression."

"tegretol is a blessing
I started tegretol after being off any form of anti-depressant for 4 months. I was taking topamax and couldn't afford my $120.00 a month prescription. A doctor prescribed tegretol saying it was similar to topomax. I feel like I was swimming in a murky pool for the last 4 months. I didn't know I felt so bad off my meds until I started taking something again. I feel normal again after 2 days. and the cost was only 23.00 for a month and a half. Thank God!!"

"I have been taking Tegretol since 1979 for Trigeminal Neuralgia, MS. Present dosage is 1200 mg per day. If I forget to take it or am late, the left side of my face reminds me that medication is due. Generic products seem to lack efficacy. I am presently trying timed release pills with questionable results. I keep a bottle of fresh 200 mg regular pills handy to deal with pain break through. A regular fresh 200mg pill will block pain in 30 minutes from ingestion. Two 200mg pills will block pain in 20 minutes. Old pills don't work. My side effects are typical: fatigue, memory loss, blurred vision. An overdose puts me to sleep. My opinion: Tegretol is one of the great discoveries of mankind. I cannot function without it."

"I'm taking 2000mg/day of Depakote now and notice a huge difference, and so have others who know me well. I have much more energy and enthusiasm for life, I wear brighter colors and generally have more hypomanic symptoms (yes, I still feel racy at times and have difficulty finishing tasks before starting other ones). Generally I like the Depakote much better. When I look back, while I was taking Tegretol I wore more earth tones and bland colors and had less interest in social things. People described me as "laid back." Now people would describe me more as "fun to be with and a workaholic."

----- And two more things you should now...

(NOTE: A 1990 U.S. FDA report found that Carbamazepine could lose one-third of its effectiveness if it is stored in humid conditions such as exist in most bathrooms.)

(NOTE: Several studies have found significant differences between brand-name and generic Carbamazepine. Switching to a generic Carbamazepine should be done very cautiously as it may not result in equivalent reduction effects.)

Hope I was helpful! :)

I took it for a few months and it worked well for anxiety. I had to stop it though because it eventually made me very unmotivated and apathetical. I just couldn't get off the couch. Just watch it if you are on birth control pills as it can reduce their efficiency.

Thank you so much.

Football,

Thanks so much, I can't believe you went to so much trouble.

I am not bipolar, I'm sort of even more indecisive now as I see that one guy on Remedy Find did far better on Depakote.

Decisions, decisions.

Thanks for your response.

Are you taking anything now to replace the Tegretol?

Denise
