AMBIEN: A great anxiolytic!!

Posted by Pluto on March 29, 2007, at 9:29:39

Hi

It was prescribed for my insomnia. But I do find it quite effective for daytime anxiety too.

I take 5mg in the morning and 5mg around 4PM. For sleeping, I will take 10mg right before sleeping.

I never had amnesic problems. Nor did I crash my car ever so far. This is the second month on it.

My conclusion: Just like the hypnotic benzo valium, Ambien too can be used as an daytime anxiolytic.

Cheers
PLS

How on God's green Earth do you not fall asleep after taking it in the daytime? I have a scrip for ambien, and within minutes of taking it, I am GONE. Sound asleep, no hopes of waking for at least 8 hours.

So, let me get this straight, Ambien a) doesn't make you fall asleep during the day; b) doesn't cause you to have a floaty-ish, dreamlike, drugged up feeling; and c) doesn't make you black out and have memory losses?

Wow, learn something new everyday.

I tried the same thing with Ambien when my Klonopin scripts were terminated by my doctor. I know what you're saying nolegirl, but remember many benzos prescribed for daytime anxiety have hypnotic action and people here are commonly taking benzos more potent than Ambien (such as Klonopin/Xanax) all throughout the daytime in doses in excess of the equivalent of 10mg Ambien. Some of them do seem to be accident prone and befuddled, which raises wider questions about the safety of daytime/long acting benzo use in general.

I often had blurred/double vision soon after taking each dose and on two occasions I had hypnagogic hallucinations, so I don't personally think it's not a safe med to be taking during the daytime. It's short half-life of 2 hours could also be problematic as tolerance develops.

I don't think I didn't not mean to say that.

why does ambien work so well?
i take it during the day (5mg chewed) when i am on the edge of rage and it takes it away
xanax doesn't touch the rage
i do get headaches about 3 - 4 hours later
but that is better than containing (or not cantaining) my rage

my pdoc used to think it was okay to use ambien this way sometimes but not now -- he has changed his mind.

My opinion (and that of the several people I closely know who took it) is that Ambien is pure junk. It's not accidental that it's constantly advertised on TV in the US (the XR version), is even paid for by Medicaid (a program for the US poor), which is very strict as to what it pays for, and is constantly pushed by general doctors (I saw primary doctors writing pads of Ambien prescriptions). Furthermore, taking it in the daytime is a bad idea. How can your body adjust to Ambien if you take it both during the day and at night time?

So many ways to sleep!

This is what I don't get. There are soooo many ways to get people sleepy.

Personally, nothing knocks me out like 15 mgs of Remeron, which has an antihistamine action. You can achieve similar results with OTC benadryl. Trazadone is effective as well. Now there is Rozarem. None of these really lead to dependency.

Then you have all the benzos like Ambien, Lunesta, and good old Valium.

So what is with all these trendy sleep aids? Do we really need all these different drugs to make us sleepy?
