You're probably right, but to be fair:

I checked for a drug interaction between parnate and benadryl at drugs.com and it shows a moderate drug interaction (basic warning about taking Benadryl and other antihistamines with MAOI's).

Also, Benadryl does reportedly potently block the reuptake of serotonin, although most psychiatrists and pharmacists probably don't even know this.

If you're worried about it then of course don't take it.
I also take the same ingredient in the PM meds like Tylenol PM. It's what's in Benadryl. I prefer not to take Tylenol too much though because it's bad on the liver.

I thought it was only drinkers who shouldn't take too much, but it's not. I don't know the exact amount but I wouldn't go over the 3 a day. Ask your Dr. though.
My husband saw a TV show the other day on Discovery about it on Dr. G, Medical Examiner.

If you google tylenol and liver, you'll get a lot of specifics. They say that some people can have liver trouble even when using it according to package instructions. Trouble can occur with advil and other NSAIDS, too.

I've been on emsam 6mg for 5 weeks now. Like some others here I feel more active but don't feel better, i.e. more hopeful, etc. I started with lamital about 10 days ago, still pretty anhedonic. I've also tried the DL-phenylaline with it. Still, up at at things but with my mood is still not much improved. (In the past had real mood boost with lexipro and geodon but both pooped out eventually.) Though, now I'm thinking of getting off the emsam and getting back on those. The psychpharm says it's still too early to tell re the emsam. Have people had really good responses to emsam suddenly on their 6th week? Seems unlikely to me. I don't want to go up on the emsam because of the irritability effect which I'm experiencing quite a bit of on this dose. I guess my ? is: What combinations have worked for people w/ emsam? any ideas out there for treating anhedonia and irritation?

It's been working out for me- selegeline/Emsam for about a year now, or longer. I didn't get much out of the "6" though- perhaps that dose is too low for some people? The "9" has worked much better. I tried the "12", but Emsam significantly lowers my blood pressure, and the highest patch really made me feel disfunctionaly faint, dizzy when I stood up, etc. Maybe try to up your dose? Why not up the dose before giving up on it? It can be a good med, and with such a beneign side efect profile compared to so many others. Mine worked alright for most of the time, then started fading, but after a few different augmentation strategies, the one that became the magic combo (for me) turned out to be Emsam/brand name Adderall. (I ultimately did not get good result from generic amphetamine, Barr brand.)

By the way, yes, both Emsam and oral selegeline seem to take a while to "kick in".

Does anyone know about the generics for ritalin? I;m using it with Emsam because right now I'm not getting much sleep (using emsam and a small amount of abilify-- think it's the abilify which, whiile very good for me, is pushing things further in the non-sleeping direction).

I had some leftovers from a very old ritalin generic prescription, which I used; then I started a recent prescription, also a generic. The new generic (methylin) has no discernible effects at the same dose as the older one (if i use 2x it is noticeable).

Is there a particular generic ritalin that's better than others? Or is the non=generic ritalin significantly better than the generics?

thanks, Honore

Unfortunately, I don't have any experience with ritalin so I don't know about the generics issue.

I'm very interested to hear that you are taking emsam and some abilify. I've been trying to get my doc to put me on a small dose of either geodon or lexipro w/emsam and they won't do it.

Has anyone else taken emsam with a small dose of abilify, geodon or lexipro?

I used to use ritalin with Emsam- I never noticed a difference between generic and brand for this med, but have heard that some people do. Sorry, don't remember the name of the generic I used.

For me, emsam has done what no other ad med has had the capacity to do (and I’ve tried quite a few). I've used it for about 10 months and would currently consider myself to have progressed to a long awaited state of relatively blissful functional normalcy. For the record it took about 6 weeks to even begin to work for me, but continued to improve for at least the first 6 months (no kidding) as the beneficial effects increased and the side effects faded (other than these occasional but quite tolerable jerks). I'm on the 12mg patch btw.

Also for a time at one point some months ago I tried combining DL-phenylalanine and it almost entirely eliminated the positive effects derived from use of emsam. This downturn was perceivable about 2 days into the experiment was realized on the third and persisted for another 3 or 4 after DLP was discontinued. Perhaps mine was an isolated case confined to my own peculiar body chemistry, but based on my experience, I'd highly recommend avoid this combo, particularly if your condition hasn’t improved sufficiently to provide enough perspective to recognize a downturn.

I stayed on Emsam for over six weeks and was up to 12 mg. per day. I ended up quitting Emsam because I opted to do ECT. I would have had to quit anyway as I was having an allergic reaction to the patch. Now I am ready to go back on meds, but I don't think it will be Emsam.

lcat10, so was your Emsam trial was unsuccessful? Do you feel like it made you worse? What meds do you have left to try? And what was your experience on the ones you've been through?
I've been having a couple of ECTs while still on Emsam, but I am wondering about giving up the Emsam to just get some good shock focus to get me out of this crazy-hell. I can't say for sure if it is from the Emsam, but with the state I am in, patience doesn't come easily. I am beginning to think all meds mess me up & I may just have to be an ECT-lifer.
-thank you!

Emsam was just not working for me even at 12mg patch. Plus I was having an allergic reaction to the patch. I was on nothing and had been off Emsam for two weeks when I started ECT. I am not so sure ECT has been helpful either. I quit after 7 shocks because I was becoming so disoriented and confused, and anterograde amnesia was reeking havoc with me. I have now just started on Desipramine. I don't know if it will work or not. Most antidepressants have not worked with me because I end up with an allergic reaction or bad side effects early on. Back in the 1980's Parnate worked really well for me. And I was doing fine for around 12 to 15 years on no meds. In 2005 I developed all sorts of physical problems - COPD, sleep apnear, had to have cervical spine surgery, surgery to my nose, got diagnosed with GERD as well. I started getting depressed again, and again could not take most antidepressants. Parnate did not work this time, and my last try was Emsam. I don't know that I would do ECT again. The anesthesia part was a very bad experience for me as well as the disorientation and confusion. Good luck with ECT and be careful. I am started to feel more depressed again, and so I don't know what that is going to mean. My last ECT was on March 23rd. I started Desipramine on March 29th.

RobertDavid -

I was wondering how the Emsam is working after a year? I went through most of the thread and couldn't find info beyond your first month. I'm SO hoping you're still doing well. I just recently learned of this drug, and am seriously considering it. I've got a 24-year history of major depression along with dysthymia; have tried all classes of ADs except MAOIs, and have only responded to two tricyclics (which no longer work).

I stumbled across this site while researching Emsam, and have to stress that I am AWED at the suffering and support I have seen on this thread. It's so humbling. My heart goes out to you all - you are incredibly courageous and caring. Thank you so much for sharing your experiences. It truly does help.

Was it like a night and day reaction? Can you explain a little more? Does it help in a multitude of areas? Do you take anything else?

Thanks for the hope.

> What dose are you guys taking? I have been on 6mg for a month. Probably going to start 9mg on Thursday.

Newbie to this board here. I just started the 6 mg patch eight days ago -- more for GAD than depression. (My stomach would not tolerate any SSRI, so I figured the MAOI patch would be worth a shot. Somewhat to my surprise, since Emsam has only been cleared for major depression, my doc agreed.) Anyway, I'll keep this board posted on my progress, if folks find that helpful.

First report: So far, so ... nothing! Really, I don't notice any difference in my mood or any decrease in the level of free-floating anxiety. But neither do I have any side effects or any increase in anxiousness, so I'll give it at least 6 to 8 weeks before giving up. The patches are a little irritating. Damned painful to peel off! But a little dab of hydrocortisone cream seems to alleviate the redness and mild burning/itching by day's end each day. We shall see if the results justify the pain and suffering :-) ...

And now a question. I had been using an OTC male-enhancement solution called Stamina RX. I stopped when I started Emsam just to be on the safe side. But the stuff is terrific -- my wife and I find it works even better than Cialis or Viagra. Does anyone know if I'd be putting myself at risk to take the Stamina RX while on the Emsam? Here's a link to a page listing the ingredients:

http://www.cljhealth.com/stamina-ingredients.htm

Finally for now, thank you to Dr. Bob for establishing and maintaining this sane & sober (i.e., non-hysterical, compared with some other boards of its type) discussion site -- and to all the smart and knowlegable people who post here, from what I can see. I look forward to learning a lot, and hopefully helping others learn some things, too.

All best,
Shortstop

I have a question.. I just started using this patch recently and i'm reading in some places that its ok to drink beer while on this patch b/c it releases the medication slowly which was different from the pils in which you could NOT drink with, but then some places i read still do NOT drink beer while on the patch... I am a beer drinker so i am very curious, has any drank beer while on this patch yet?? If so, anything? If not, any input ??
I'd appreciate it..

I drink beer occassionally and I'm on the 9mg.
The literature says to "avoid the tap beers and other beers that have not been pasteurized." (because of the tyramine)
Under "Acceptable Foods and Drinks" it says:
"As with other antidepressants, concomitant use of alcohol with EMSAM is not recommended. (Bottled and canned beers and wines contain little or no tyramine.)"
So bottled beer is okay, it is just not recommended as is the case with any antidepressant.
