Need advice!

Posted by Jimmyboy on November 6, 2006, at 11:14:33

Hi all, was wondering if anyone could give me some advice...

I have suffered from what I have always called " depression" for my whole life, it manifests itself as long periods of amotivation, excessive sleepiness, where I could sleep all day, bodily weakness , brain fog, poor concentration and memory, no appetite, avoidance of people and social situations, anxiety. I have tried at least 80% of all psychiatric medications out there, nothing has helped with the fatigue / amotivation, stuff has helped with te anxiety problems, but the fatigue has been there 90% of my life..

Question : Could this be caused by something else other than a mental problem? Something life Chronic Fatigue, or some other related physical problem? I feel that is is worse and it is basically ending my life , so any advice would be so greatly appreciated..

JB

Have not had a full panel thyroid test done, just the basic thyroid test along with some other blood tests, everything came up normal, or so I was told, although on my white blood cell count, the monocyte test came back really high and the eosinophil count came back moderately high , no one explained what this meant... or if it was relevant.

Does anyone know what this means?

Anyone know any other physical tests that could be done??

Thanks so much

JB

Stimulant + what??

OK, here is what I need, something to make me more awake, alert, motivated, etc.. So I am thinking some type of stimulant, like adderall, ritalin, etc.

But I also get really bad anxiety/social phobia, which is made worse by stimulants, so I was wondering what I could take that would " take the edge off" the anxiety, but not cancel out the beneficial effects of the stimulant??

Is there anything? PS- I want to stay as far away from anything effecting serotonin , every drug that messes much with that has given me low libido ( or none) and that is as bad as anything I think, so I would love to avoid that . Thanks if anyone has any ideas.

Any kind of idea will be entertained : )

I wouldn't worry too much about the monocytes and eosinophils. I believe not sure that eosinophils are related to allergies. Monocytes again I think are disease fighters. If elevated you may be fighting an infection or virus or the eosinohils equal allergies. Do you have any? I'd also google them. Love Phillipa

if you have anxiety that gets worse on stims, they should be back-burnered for now. If you have good insurance, maybe try Provigil...its expensive, but its a new, often effective stimulant that's less harsh than old-school stims. Plus, its a schedule IV, not schedule II, so thats a plus.

You might want to try an MAOI...maybe EMSAM, again, if you have insurance, cause its expensive. You can add stuff to EMSAM (stims, benzos, whatever) pretty easily, but you'll need to be very careful adding stuff to old-school MAOIs.

A mood stabilizer in low dose might be helpful...trilepal or lamictal in particular might helpful. You can add stuff to these as necessary.

Since you also have ADHD symptoms, you might want to consider Effexor..its rough stuff to withdraw from, but super-high dosages can help people when other drugs fail. It does effect serotonin, but at higher dosages it effects dopamine, norepinephrine, etc...basically a tricyclic, only cleaner.

Good luck!

Can this be caused by something other than a mental problem?
What a question.
I'd need an education (including philosophy) to start on this. But the short answer (before I embarass myself) is YES. It could be anything.
Here are some things that come quickly to mind
hormone imbalance
krebs cycle imbalance
vitamin/mineral deficiencies
neurotransmitter thingos
allergies
electrolyte imbalances
urea/creatine ratio ie not enough protein
insulin/glucose/cortisol out of whack
leaky gut

I could go on, but you get the picture. It could be anything (your liver has packed it in, you have cancer).
If you have the money a holistic doctor who knows his biochem is a good idea. It's been really good for me. I started seeing mine 5 years ago now. Fatigue, depression and drugs were/are the problem.

Thanks, I am willing to spend the money for tests, I just don't know who to talk to .. I think seeing a more open minded alternative doc is the way I am going to go, it can't hurt at this point.. Good luck
