Antidepressants Work Right Away?

Posted by Phillipa on October 18, 2006, at 14:32:17

I don't get it as my neighbors grown Daughter was severly depressed. And moved in with her parents. They took her to the doc not a pdoc he put her on lexapro and seroquel loomg at night. And in a day she says she's better. Can anyone explain this? She says they help for around a few months and then don't. I just don't get it. So many meds I've tried. Thanks for any responses as the board is rather empty lately. Love phillipa

Maybe it's a little of the placebo effect? She feels better about having taken a positive step in her life by going on antidepressants so the depression lifts some because of that. Just a guess, since I obviously don't know her.

I have a way-out idea. Maybe it's the AD side effect-maybe she has "typical" depression and has trouble sleeping and starting an AD does what it does to many of us-puts a lot of unscheduled naps into the next couple days. She feels better because she's got some rest and therefore feels less fatigued, etc. I vote that as an 8.6 on the Baloney Theory Index...

You're jealous though, right? You've been suffering mightily and there is no "take this and you'll feel better" drug for you. I empathize completely...constant anxiety is terrible.

What makes me mad his her parents are so kind. Her Mother went into the hospital with pneumonia and her Dad only has one kidney due to cancer and there was something on the scan of the other kidney they were waiting for the results. She immediately was able to drive and go places. Her parents took her to their doc her Mother is in her 70's and so weak from being sick. Her Dad thank god is okay. So this doc gives her a pill and low and behold she's all better. I used to see this in the hospital could never figure it out. Now I think I did she pays for nothing her parents everything so no stress on her at all. And of course I'm jelous I work so hard at getting better. Today she walks over to our house looks at it inside and then just walks out. Something is not right here. Love phillipa

I have no idea if it was a placebo effect or not, but the very first day that I ever took an anti-depressant, 20mg of Cymbalta, I felt better within hours of taking the medication. Within 2 weeks, I felt that the depression was 100% gone.

It seemed like a miracle at the time.

Virgin receptors? Not fried receptors like so many of us who have been on AD's for so many years?? Heck, actually nobody really knows the answer to this question. My guess would be everyone is different, some are better absorbers, there is just so much about the complex brain and CNS that scientists don't know. Only guesses apply here.

My guess would be that she was reacting to a decrease in anxiety, which some ADs can produce more quickly, and which can be affected by the placebo effect as well.

If her problems really did go entirely away on the first day, and it's not placebo effect, then I would consider it highly likely that her problem wasn't Major Depressive Disorder in any flavor. Maybe something more Axis II? Or even whichever Axis general life issues are listed under...

Well when she first arrived her friend had given her some prozac which she used to take. She took it for about a week til her parents took her to their GP. Her Mom just got out of the hospital with pneumonia. And he put her on lexapro and seroquel. I would have guessed the seroquel too if that had been the first. She claims she went 9 months without any ad's . She's also in AA maybe she was drinking it away? As Monte says who Knows? But it does make me jelous. Being honest here. Love Phillipa

A reduction in anxiety would make sense to me in why things happened so quickly for me. In the two years since I started this whole brain med trip, I have come to believe that anxiety was my real issue rather than depression. Yes, there are elements of depression and ADHD, but anxiety seems to be the predominant symptom, even though it was the last to be diagnosed.

Ativan does way more for me, it seems, than the ADs ever did.

It just makes common sense to me that if you are very anxious why would you wait 4-6 weeks for an ad to maybe take away anxiety. Racer didn't you say in another thread something about this in reguards to your husband. But to me a benzo like ativan just makes more sense. Love Phillipa ps sorry but something that makes you feel horrible for weeks was not meant to be.

I think it's placebo, that's why it fades
