a few atenolol and remeron questions--kinda long

Posted by saturn on October 17, 2006, at 20:41:14

I have a few questions--if anyone could answer any of them I'd be grateful.

Is Remeron useful for social phobia/situational anxiety? For example, will it keep the heart from going crazy during a presentation if one didn't want to take a beta blocker (I realize Remeron can't be taken "as needed" like a beta blocker). I've only taken Remeron for a few days (30 mg)and I do recall feeling both calm and sedated (I view both as different sensations). I wonder if Remeron could keep me calm enough to prevent situational anxiety--especially my racing heart. I would love to be calm like this at all times without the excessive sedation.

Does Remeron actually increase serotonin or does it just block serotonin receptors? Does it function as an ssri in addition to its alpha-2 adrenergic antagonism?

Is it correct that atenolol has the least CNS penetration among beta blockers and is a 25 mg dose likely to interfere w/ exercise or cause significant tolerance (could one stay on 25 mg atenolol for years without reduced effect?)?

My last question is kinda a "what would you do". I rarely have anxiety when in crowds or just driving or hanging out, but once I have an episode of social anxiety (during an interview for example) I'm shaken up for the entire day. My worst symptom is a racing heart. It's difficult to understand how sometimes I can be cool as ice and other times the exact opposite. I prefer a benzo or beta blocker as last line and can't tolerate ssri's.

I'd also be interested to hear if anyone takes any combination of either Remeron, atenolol or Provigil. Thanks much.

Peace...Saturn

at a higher dosage Remeron will increase noradrenaline transmission. Remeron is clearly not an
anxiolitic and it is only indicated for depression. If you take a Remeron during "interview" anxiety your heart beat will be harder and faster (pos. inotropic, chronotropic action). You will feel more alert in situations of concentration eg. learning, maybe an advantage. You may feel some pseudo anxiolitic properties due to sedation because of Remerons antihistamine actions. I don't think there's much anti-anxiety due to blocking 5ht-2 receptors.

warm regards

thanks sincerely! I was especially curious about the 5ht-2 antagonism.
