CIPRO, Lithium, clonazepam, and Synthroid

Posted by Squiggles on October 16, 2006, at 12:32:14

I am on the 7th day of CIPRO - an antibiotic;
the common side effects listed on the pharmacy
blurb are:

- dizziness
- nausea
- possible mood changes or depression
- sleepiness
- headache
- jitters

(those are not the adverse ones)

I had the above, but the one that was most
disturbing and made sick up to today - was
dyspnea, and chest tightness. I spent most of the week in bed trying to breathe freely. It was reminiscent of what i used to get with Ibuprofin with lithium.

The dr. told me that there would be no interaction with lithium-- but i think this chest/heart/breathing problem was an interaction. It was worse upon taking it and tapered over two hours.

I just looked up intereactions and saw that mitrozonazepin [sp?] another antiobiotic *does* interact with lithium.

I am glad this is the last day.

Just in case anybody wants to know-- i think that was an interaction.

Squiggles I just got off Cipro and Flagyl for diverticulitis. And it wasn't fun at all. A lot of side effects when you look them up. I think Flagyl is worse though. But it sounds like a definite side effect. Thankfully you took your dose right? If not skip it can't remember if that's the one that's once a day or twice a day. Do you feel okay now? Thank you - i appreciate sharing the side
effects; i just came to - it knocked me out;
i hate the heart palpitations and the
congestion/breathing problems - but i think
i am now over the worse part.

And thank God, this is the last day of the
pill. I still feel ill the next day so maybe
later, mid week it will be out of my system.

thank you.

Who would have thunk it? Depression from
an antiobiotic; i had almost forgotten what
depression felt like. I think it is the
worst thing in the world-- well, maybe second
to physical pain. No wonder people, kill
themselves when depression is untreated.

Squiggles, Cipro is a quinolone antibiotic, one of the absolute worst drugs for anyone with psychological problems as it affects the CNS horribly.......I took a quinolone for a UTI and it almost made me crazy with anxiety and depression, insomnia the whole nine yards. Even people without psychological problems have had horrible anxiety from the quinolones. I will never ever take another one!

Thanks valene; i hope the infection does not
return now that the 7-day treatment is over;
if it does, i am going to another doctor; i asked this dr. if there was an interaction, and ** said
no -- but indirectly, yes i would say. Good thing the lithium protected me but it was a very rough ride.

I appreciate your feedback.

I'm taking something similiar to Cipro and I feel horrible. Only taken it for a few days and have quite a few more to go. Don't think I can make it. Terrible indigestion, can barely eat and have had to stop most of my other meds. Feeling really depressed, too. Humm maybe I'm not nuts.

You have probably been told not to stop
antibiotic therapy for some important reasons--
like the bacteria becoming resistant before
it's all dead. Unpleasant as it is, try to
go through it.

BTW, i should make a footnote here in case
that dr. actually found something like E-coli
besides inconsequential UTI stuff -- this is
the first day i have not had the runs in about
5 years (a daily horror) -- could be the thyroid
affected by the antibiotic - i don't know-- time will tell. If i'm lucky and this continues, it will be an interesting result. My other dr. did not think it was important anyway, probably lithium-related.

This is the last post i will make on
this, because i think it is now getting
out of topic; but (doh!) all UTIs are
a result of E-coli, but this bug comes
in different stripes -- most of it benign
and even essential to the body;

The "anti-social" one; the one that kills
people by causing hemolytic uremia (e.g.
the spinach outbreak recently) is

E. coli O157:H7

And if you have that (if i had that) i think
i'd be dead; also antibiotics do not kill
e-coli bacteria (not sure about that--
something about changing their DNA structure
instead).

Squiggles if it changes their DNA it probably renders them incapable of reproducing. A lot of antibiotics do things like this.Love Phillipa

I don't trust those bugs. They are more ancient than mammals. I bet as soon as you turn your back on them, they mutate. Ooooo - good costume
for Halloween - E.coli 0157.H7 - what would it
look like?

Cipro is a quinolone antibiotic.
Quinolones have been implicated in all kinds of adverse effects including Achilles tendon ruptures and psychiatric episodes.
I would not have believed this until I did some research, it's not just quack internet sites and trial lawyers that came up with this, the Wall St. Journal had a story about it.
There is an active quinolone effect group on Yahoo.
I certainly believe that 2 rounds of Cipro six years ago may well have led to my depression cycle.

I'm glad i'm through with the treatment.
This is not the first time i have suspected
that there's real chaos in the drug world.
Frankly, i'm tired of monitoring my drugs
for 25 yrs. -- it's hard research work
and you can never be sure -- as i said,
it's a crapshoot. Right now, i am very
concerned about a friend of mine taking
Warfarin for no good reason, imho. I am
afraid that many people i have known who
have died, have died because of adverse reaction.

And i don't blame the doctors who are overwhelmed;
i think the problem is TOO MANY drugs to examine and choose from.

BTW, irishcatholic,

As bad as it was, and perhaps needing
a warning for very unpleasant side effects,
CIPRO came nothing to NOT taking my drugs
or withdrawing from them. I have taken
better antibiotics and next time if i need
one i will ask for something lighter.

But it was not horrible like clonazepam
withdrawal -- just made sick like i had
a very bad flu and chest congestion, and
headache.

Probably killed every bug in my body --
nobody can bug me now, i hope lol!

Well get and eat yougurt and some probiotics to restore the good bugs to your intestine. Oh and it will keep away any yeast infections too if you know what I mean. Love Phillipa

Yes yogurt/probiotics VERY important after antibiotic meds!!
But I've never had a DOCTOR tell me that, I had to find it out on my own, the hard way. Yeast overgrowth spurred by antibiotic use can screw up all kinds of things, in my case intestinal and sinus problems. Who would believe that eating yogurt fixed my recurring sinus headaches?
I believe it because I've done experiments with and without and proved it to myself. I assume most doctors would think I'm wacko on this.

Thank you for the tip. I like
yoghurt anyway-- it does tend
to have other unpleasant effects
for me but nothing too bad-- could
be the sugar added, as i seem to
be sugar malabsorptive. I should
probably eat more vegetables too.

Squiggles plain yougurt not the type with sugar and fruit in it. You can add your own fresh fruit berries or even make a shake. Even wheat germ would give you vitamin E I think. Oh each morning my breakfast is granola(yes has sugar) mixed with plain yougurt and blackberries fresh on the top and a bananna. Love Phillipa

Thank you. Yum. Just came back from BMJ.com
- articles on health (lack of it) in the GAZA
strip, and children dying of malnutrition and
dehydration in many parts of the world. We certainly have it good in the West. Imagine if all that money spent on weapons were used against this kind of enemy;
