Funny you show this. One of these TV ads we have running here is for cymbalta.

Now what p- me off is not so much the AD itself, but how they made it.

For those who never seen it,the commercial does this..........

Starts off with a very accurate description of depression, fast and precise, which catches the users, and users familys attention.

Shows the faces of depression, the family member with the head down at dinner, the worker at her desk in distress etc.

The music, the narration, you begin to believe this is a nuetral commercial reaching out.

Then past midpoint after you are sunk into this commercial ready to call the number they swift by the fact this is a commercial for A SPECIFIC DRUG.

All that, all that crap to push a new drug.

I know the thinking behind this, get the viewer to believe you understand and care, then slap the drug in there face, maybe theyll think this one drug will be different, its the answer above all the past drugs they might have tried.

My mother seeing this called me and i had to tell her that it was just a ad,so hey good just slime, you got your scheme across.

Also lunestas commercial is absurd as well.Even people using it with success i can feel confident assuming are not,"smiling there f- heads off as they climb into bed,and they are also not DRIFTING OFF along a butterfly to wonderland"

Even with the drug sleep is a precious thing to achieve.

Then after all this, some doc turns around and tells you that you are expecting too much from drugs.Lol what a time to live in.

Ed, how entertaining! They certainly are ugly when they are on the same page, aren't they? I almost think that drug companies are trying to make oodles of money instead of helping people who suffer from mental illness...:>}

Yes, though the Zispin is the non US form of Remeron :)

But its a multibillion dollar industry here... and you're paying for the ads, in part. Economy of course does drive things and I'm not saying drug companies shouldn't be paid for genuine innovation -- skipping the marketing it still takes in the hundreds of millions of dollars to create compounds in the lab; faster now with computerized models and genetic manipulation, but still. But some of these things really aren't innovative. Like Lexapro -- okay, someone figured out how to get the metabolite. Wellbutrin XR, Ambien CR -- wanted to protect the patent. Wellbutrin and Zyban, the same drug. Since countries like Canada have high taxation rates they can afford to set low drug prices nationally and not completely wreck the economy.

Don't get me wrong, there are definate problems with social medicine, among the 35 million people in Canada and the 60 million in Great Britain. And France, etc. One word. Triage.

But I believe in it -- how you implement it.. (staggering) with 300 million people (I'm old enough to remember this country when it had a bit more than 250 million.) I haven't the faintest idea. It would probably have to be a public-private partnership with the government propping up existing HMO and PPOs. But that's politics...

The really bizzare thing is that the more "me-tooish", the more marketing that is needed, the higher the drug price has to be to pay for that marketing, etc. Any company introducing a really effective AD, for example, that was basically free of side effects, wouldn't have to put a $50 ad in the New Zealand Times to have people demanding to have it available.

It will be interesting to see how far the Wal-Mart $4/month for any generic on their list (there are no psychoactive drugs on the list yet)
will go. Generic drugs are dirt cheap for pharmacies to buy and look at the huge savings it would represent. Wal-Mart is making a profit on those $4/month prescriptions. They could put Medicare part? out of business if people could basically get any generic drug at that price. Interesting. The robber barons of the US, Opus 2,367.

Those were mainly professional medical magizines,
the intended audience are all english speaking docs. Big pharma have significant ownership outside the US; GlaxoSmithKline PLC, Novartis AG, Sanofi-Aventis, and AstraZeneca Group PLC for example.

The Navane and Mellaril ads are a hoot, given what we know today.

I think there are several things that need to be fixed. I think the FDA needs to conduct independent testing on all meds for approval,
or perhaps take over the last stage(s) of testing. Provide enough money to make research into innovative meds an attractive offer. Increase spending on medical research generally and on pharmacology research.

We do see ads for psych drugs quite often on TV and in print in the US. Big pharma charges the US and some other countries a much higher price for their products so that other countries can have affordable meds. So big pharma flogs their products without mercy in the media where they charge the most.

it's illegal to advertise psych drugs here in Australia, which I'm glad about and I hope it stays that way. I only found out that this was happening in the US about 6 months ago and freaked.
