Have Your Thyroid Checked

Posted by Phillipa on October 12, 2006, at 22:30:17

I already posted on health but in my opinion the most experts are here. I've had hasimotos thyroiditis for l0 when all my problems started. I got back the results of my blood work today and my TSH is only 0.5 too low. And when this first started it was 22 much too high. I found out tonight from my neice who also has it that high or low both cause high anxiety. My doc is cutting down my dose. And for the first time I'm making an appointment with an endocrinologist. See diabetes multiple autoimmune diseases are in my family. I figure it's about time I saw an expert in the field. Also t4 was slightly high which I pointed out to the doc. Love Phillipa. The thyroid causes so many psych problems

What a blessing it would be if this was a part of your recent problem with anxiety and depression. This is fixable!

p.s. I have taken T3 for years to potentiate my ADs.

Good point. I been hypothyroid for about 5 years - and was taking 75mcg of Synthroid (my TSH was 23). Then, a few months ago my TSH was retested and it was back up to 15. So the Synthroid was bumped up to 100 mcg and now my TSH is around 2.5 - well within normal. It's interesting how little it takes to change it - obviously in either direction.

Good luck and hopefully your medication adjustment will make a big difference.

Thanks trying to get a referral to an endocrinologist since I've never seen one and it's been out of wack for l0 years the amount of time of the depression and bad anxiety. So were you really climbing the walls at 23 with anxiety? Love Phillipa

What's weird is that I didn't really have any symptoms - at least that I was aware of. The only thing I noticed after I started on the Synthroid was that it was easier to drop a few pounds when I needed to. Other than that I was pretty much asymptomatic. I read that there's a small percentage like me. And the only reason I had it checked at all was because 15 years earlier some doc ran routine blood work and told me I should watch it. So much for watching it every 15 years - but hey - at least I found it.

I've never seen an endo - but I would in a heartbeat if I thought it would help. I think I'm adequately medicated though - and since I was NOT depressed when I was diagnosed as hypothyroid, I don't think my depression is linked to it (aside from the fact that it's being treated).

Any teaching hospitals in your region? That's a good source even if only for a referral. My regular doc is an internist - and she's the one that found my pdoc. I have to drive an hour to see him but it's worth it. The only pdocs in town are not very good.

Good luck with your search.
